As students look to apply to new positions, whether they may be as interns, organization members, or part-time workers, they must have confidence in themselves to succeed. Ben Mathew, a student in the Texas Honors Computer Science and Business Program, is an excellent example of this level of self-conviction. “I think I literally sent out over 100 applications,” said Mathew when asked about how he started working at H-E-B as a product management intern. As they say, “you have to be your biggest advocate,” and Ben Mathew certainly embodies this quote to a tee.

Ben Mathew is a sophomore student in the Texas CSB program, and he loves playing basketball and traveling in his free time. Ben is also a member of the Texas Product Engineering Team, and he says that the mentors he has met in this organization have truly offered him great advice as he looks to pursue his interests in product management.

Keep reading to find out more about Ben’s experiences in product management at H-E-B and hear some of his advice for success in the field!

Alumni Spotlight: Maddy Kulkarni

Canfield BHP Alumnus Maddy Kulkarni's Headshot

Maddy Kulkarni

Topics of Interest: Social impact marketing, sustainability, The Dallas Heroes Project, PepsiCo, corporate social responsibility, volunteering, nonprofits

Canfield BHP students grow up to become the change-makers of the world, pursuing causes bigger than themselves to make the world a better place. Whether in the office or the field, our students graduate with the knowledge and experience to make a difference no matter where they go.

Canfield BHP alum, Maddy Kulkarni, graduated with her CBHP honors degrees in finance and marketing in 2004. She later earned her MBA at the Stern School of Business at NYU. A passionate advocate, Maddy has spent her career in marketing moving the needle forward on social impact, sustainability, and corporate social responsibility initiatives. Maddy’s work as the Global Marketing Director of Sustainability and Purpose at PepsiCo is helping brands within the PepsiCo portfolio take up sustainability and many important causes to engage consumers and help make the world a better place.

“Sustainability used to be this thing off to the side that companies did for “CSR” – corporate social responsibility”, she said. “But now that consumers want to know if brands are made sustainably, with proper human rights practices, and good labor practices, it’s our job as marketers to help them understand what’s happening.”

We sat down with Maddy to talk about her work at PepsiCo and what drives her passion for volunteering, social impact, and sustainability. You’ll also read about her nonprofit, The Dallas Heroes Project, and her new textbook, Social Impact Marketing: The Essential Guide for Changemakers, a step-by-step guide on how to market any idea a student has that they believe can positively change the world. Coming off the past year of isolation amid the pandemic, CBHP freshmen, staff, and students were eager to launch their school year with an in-person event. Seeing their peers after months of online learning was, for many freshmen, a formative college experience. Traditionally, the Leadership Kickoff is an overnight event held at the Newcombe Tennis Ranch. However, this year, we did something a bit different in order to better adhere to COVID-19 safety guidelines. The event was a huge success. Holding stations and games on campus gave students the necessary time to explore, meet peers, and become acquainted with McCombs.  Continue reading

Internship Spotlight: Anthony Tang at Recalibrate

Headshot for Canfield BHP Senior Anthony Tang

Anthony Tang

Topics of Interest: Recalibrate, mental health and well-being, data analytics, research, statistics, polls, science, applied learning, teaching, education

The sky’s the limit as they say. Canfield BHPers know this well because, in our program, students are free to explore several aspects of business, computer science, engineering, and more to fit their career plans and goals. Like Canfield BHPer, Anthony Tang, said in his interview with us recently, “You don’t have to do something for a career. The things that you do don’t have to meet some caliber or level. There are a lot of ways to explore your interests and you shouldn’t feel limited.” We couldn’t have said it better, Anthony.

Anthony Tang is a Canfield BHP senior studying biochemistry while obtaining certificates in Spanish and Statistical Modeling. An avid basketball fan and resident baller at “BHPballers”, Anthony is the example of a well-rounded student who embraces exploration and experience in ways that promote the best personal growth possible. Oh, and he’s also an awesome violinist and member of the Healing with Harmonies ensemble on campus!

We caught up with Anthony to hear about time he spent teaching science to elementary kids in Jamaica and heard about his experience as a Research and Data Analytics Intern at Recalibrate, a company owned by Canfield BHP alum Gloria Chan Packer (check out her spotlight here!). Read on to learn more about Anthony!
