#TXMS Student Spotlight: Zarin Alam MSM 2019

Program:

Master of Science Program in Marketing

Student Name:

Zarin Alam

Graduating Class:

Class of 2019

Undergraduate Alma Mater:

UT Austin, Marketing

About Zarin:

I am driven by my curiosity to learn about peoples’ backgrounds, their stories, and how that affects the way we think, especially when it comes to marketing research and analytics. Creativity comes naturally to me, so I like finding unique ways to tackle issues and projects. I’m a huge team player, and enjoy working collaboratively.

Proudest Accomplishment:

My proudest accomplishment is taking on a new leadership role within my family. I am the eldest sibling, and first child, from an immigrant family. As I am getting older and gaining new experiences in the world, I am taking what I have learned back to my parents and younger siblings and helping them navigate through different obstacles. For example, I help my parents simplify their lives by teaching them about technologies and apps that will benefit them in their day-to-day tasks. With my siblings, (Triplets, all age 10) I am striving to be an excellent role model and guide them through the struggles that I personally had to face growing up in a society different than my parents’.

Why did you choose the MSM Program?

I have always had an interest in peoples’ behavior and behavioral patterns so I studied Marketing in my undergrad. I soon realized that the jobs that I was interested in required more than what I was taught in undergrad, and needed to develop the technical skills to complement my natural tendency to understand and study the behaviors of others.

What are you looking forward to most this year?

I am looking forward to applying what I have learned throughout this year in a real-world setting, and actually get to help a company improve their marketing efforts in a team setting. I’m very excited for the capstone project!

Program:

Master of Science Program in IT & Management

Student Name:

Lovekesh Bansal

Graduating Class:

Class of 2019

Undergraduate Alma Mater:

Delhi Technological University – Information Technology

About Lovekesh:

I am definitely an introvert and my dream job as a child was to play PC games all day to make a living. I enjoy traveling, but not the adventurous backpacking around the world kind of travel.

Proudest Accomplishment:

In my previous job, I was given the task to develop a new framework from the lead design architect as the current framework was not working and the senior developers were unable to find an efficient solution. I resigned the whole thing, presented it to the architect and the design was accepted and is still being used.

Why did you choose the MSITM Program?

I wanted to enhance my knowledge and move out from the walls in which I was living between. The MSITM program was exactly what I was looking for. The curriculum covered the subject areas I wanted to study plus the brand value of McCombs is unmatched.

What are you looking forward to most this year?

I am really looking forward to learning about new technologies that I can use to help advance my career profile in the Data Management and Analytics domain.

#TXMS Student Spotlight: Fahad Raza MSF 2019

Program:

Master of Science Program in Finance

Student Name:

Fahad Raza

Graduating Class:

Class of 2019

Undergraduate Alma Mater:

UT Austin, Sociology and Economics

About Fahad:

I am originally from the Cypress/Katy area in the outskirts of Houston, Texas. Shortly after starting my academic career at the University of Texas, I opened Kababeque in Downtown Austin — a food truck that highlights the cuisine of the Mediterranean region with the flavors of South Asia. Since then, Kababeque has expanded into three locations throughout the Austin area and continues to become a staple in the city.

Proudest Accomplishment:

I will never forget watching Vince Young run through the end zone in the 2005 National Championship and realizing at that moment: I wanted to grow up and be a Texas Longhorn. This Spring, I earned a degree from UT Austin – my dream school. That feeling of walking the stage and becoming a part of the Texas Ex family is unparalleled.

Why did you choose the MSF Program?

After starting a business and watching it grow into something special, I quickly realized that I wanted to help others do the same while honing my own skills. With my applied experience, I want to consult other business owners and leaders in making critical decisions that guide their organizations through a positive trajectory. Going to a top-ranked business school like McCombs while staying in an amazing city like Austin to learn all the ins and outs of the financial world was a no-brainer.

What are you looking forward to most this year?

I am extremely excited to be part of a cohort that shares the same drive for success that I do. Being able to learn from all of the great MS Finance faculty members as well as learning from each other as a group is something that I’m really happy about. Just from taking the summer courses alone, I can tell that this program will be very challenging but extremely fulfilling.

#TXMS Student Spotlight: Jeffrey Fulkerson MSBA 2019

Program:

Master of Science Program in Business Analytics

Student Name:

Jeffrey Fulkerson

Graduating Class:

Class of 2019

Undergraduate Alma Mater:

UT Austin, Computer Science

About Jeffrey:

I have a background in computer science and studio art, with an interest in developing data visualizations. I believe that as our information age progresses and our society becomes more complex, making statistical analysis understandable is essential to the public good. I am hoping to be able to help push data science methodology further into the public sphere so legislation is based solidly in well-sourced research.

Proudest Accomplishment:

A loved one was going through a very challenging time and I worked to gain a better understanding of clinical depression and helped implement support skills necessary to make their life better. This has fueled my passion for what I hope to accomplish in my career.

Why did you choose the MSBA Program?

I wanted to be near my family and friends and participate in a program that would prepare me to be a data scientist. The MSBA program covers most of the necessary fields that other programs do not, and will help me network with public servants here in Austin, which is where I want to apply my skills.

What are you looking forward to most this year?

Increasing my understanding of statistics. Meeting people from this technical world that I haven’t been a part of until now. Getting a well-paying job in order to get myself and some of my friends on their feet; the more money I make the more support I can offer people I know in particularly bad or stagnant circumstances. Contributing meaningfully to the City of Austin and Texas as a whole.

#TXMS Student Spotlight: Megan Burke MSM 2019

Program:

Master of Science Program in Marketing

Student Name:

Megan Burke

Graduating Class:

Class of 2019

Undergraduate Alma Mater:

UT Austin, Psychology

About Megan:

I received my Bachelor of Arts from the University of Texas at Austin in May 2018. I discovered my passion for unpacking consumer behavior through various psychology and business courses. I am originally from North Jersey, but Texas has been my home for the past 4 years. I spend my free time fostering dogs, designing kitchens, playing IM volleyball with my marketing cohort and eating my way through Austin.

Proudest Accomplishment:

My proudest accomplishment is being part of IBM Design Studio and UT Austin’s inaugural cohort for the Radical Collaboration Design Program. I was selected as 1 of 24 students out of 100+ applicants. During this semester long program, my team developed an innovative university registration system utilizing IBM Watson’s natural language APIs and data aggregation platform. This included conducting primary research with UT students, administrators, and advisors to target pain points in the current registration process. Our team applied these insights along with design thinking principles to create and test prototypes with sponsor users. Our team presented their solution to stakeholders, the Head of IBM Design, UT’s Dean of the College of Fine Arts, and UT’s Director of the Center for Integrated Design. We received all around positive comments from the audience, and she earned the Design Thinking Practitioner and Design Thinking Co-Creator badges from IBM.

Why did you choose the MSM Program?

I chose to join the Master of Science in Marketing program to improve my quantitative and technical skills, so I can work as an analyst upon graduation. This program appealed to me because it blended qualitative and quantitative data and research methods. Although this is an analytics heavy program, McComb’s curriculum keeps students on track to solving business problems so that they don’t get lost in the data. Thus far my favorite course is Databases and Data Visualizations. I love creating meaningful graphics that tell a story about the data at hand.

What are you looking forward to most this year?

The Capstone project in the spring is also a major reason why I chose McCombs. I look forward to working with a company’s real data to consult and solve a problem that is impacting their business. I also look forward to upcoming social events where I can hang out with my MSM friends and meet students from other MS programs!

#TXMS Student Spotlight: Thomas Stamatopoulos MSITM 2019

Program:

Master of Science Program in Information Technology and Management

Student Name:

Thomas Stamatopoulos

Graduating Class:

Class of 2019

Undergraduate Alma Mater:

National Technical University of Athens, Mechanical Engineering

About Thomas:

Coming from Athens, Greece I studied Mechanical Engineering and worked two years at a Construction company; first on site managing a team of contractors and then in the main office, before I got a Master’s at Marine Technology. After that, I jumped into a job at a Shipping Company, with which I had the chance to travel around Southeast Asia and the Persian Gulf and spent a fair amount if time on board oil tankers. I also practiced judo for 5 years and would have gotten the black belt if it wasn’t for my military service.

On a personal note, I am committed and thorough and I will try to solve all crosswords of a book in order of appearance. I take pride into managing my personal problems, but will go out of my way to help others. I must always find something to do and cannot stand idle for the life of me, but the sea calms me and I have a soft spot for dogs.

Proudest Accomplishment:

While I was working at a construction company, I started realizing that my ambitions and interests were not in line with what the industry had to offer and decided to develop my skills and venture into a new path towards Shipping. While completing a Master’s Degree in parallel to working full time was challenging, I was proud when I completed it and managed to get a job in a strong and developing company. There, my hard work and devotion to my responsibilities was acknowledged and rewarded and I quickly rised through the ranks and was given huge responsibilities managing day to day activities of 8 multi-million vessels. It is always gratifying to achieve a personal goal and prove to yourself that you are capable of continuous improvement.

Why did you choose the MSITM Program?

Watching the evolution of business and the ever-growing integration of technology and analytics in every organization, I wanted to strengthen my technical skills and create a competitive advantage transiting into a more technical role. The MSITM program’s curriculum was filled with a mix of the latest and greatest technologies used by businesses, while being in the McCombs Business School was a guarantee of its quality and also ensured that the knowledge would by provided in a practical context.

What are you looking forward to most this year?

During the Spring Semester, as part of the MSITM curriculum, I will participate in a capstone project creating a solution to an actual business problem working with one of the great companies that are in Austin and are interested in the program. I am exicted about being able to take ownership of the problem and working with the company. I will have a chance to implement my acquired knowledge and get real life experience prior to the completion of my studies. I am also exited to go to the South By South West conference in Austin, where companies and entrepreneurs meet and present innovative solutions, getting a chance see the future of technology first hand.

#TXMS Student Spotlight: Tyler Amodio MSF 2019

Program:

Master of Science Program in Finance

Student Name:

Tyler Amodio

Graduating Class:

Class of 2019

Undergraduate Alma Mater:

UT Austin, Economics

About Tyler:

I am from Long Island, New York. I attended UT as an undergrad after transferring from Connecticut College, where I played DIII NCAA lacrosse. I have been fascinated with entrepreneurship my entire life and have been involved in a few companies in the Austin startup ecosystem.

Proudest Accomplishment:

My proudest accomplishment has to be securing a partnership with Sam’s Club/Walmart for my college grocery delivery startup Deliver U. I had spent practically a month cold calling my way to their headquarters when I hit a dead end. After searching through LinkedIn, I was able to get ahold of former Executive VP of Operations Don Frieson who had loved the concept. Shortly after, I had a phone call with Sam’s Operations team and secured a partnership. This was a great life lesson as it showed me persistence and determination pays off greatly.

Why did you choose the MSF Program?

I have been involved in various business ventures throughout my life, and to me, understanding the underlying fundamentals of Finance is a necessity. I was involved in a previous startup where my lack of financial knowledge lost me a portion of my company. After hearing about the MSF program’s rigorous and expedited coursework, I applied right away.

What are you looking forward to most this year?

This year I am looking forward to broadening my financial knowledge and utilizing it to secure a job in sustainable investments. Apart from that, I look forward to enjoying this beautiful city and everything it had to offer with upcoming events like ACL and SXSW

Texas McCombs Master of Science Program in Marketing Receives STEM Eligibility

The one-year Master of Science in Marketing (MSM) program at the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin have been designated as a STEM eligible degree program. The designation indicates the rigorous quantitative nature of the MSM curriculum, and international students graduating from colleges and universities in the United States can prolong their studies in the country an additional 24 months by attending a STEM-certified graduate program.

STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) programs are certified for international students by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP).

Program Director Dr. Jade DeKinder of the MSM said the STEM approval reflects the highly quantitative curriculum of the MSM degree. “The world of marketing has changed so rapidly that successful marketers for the next generation need to have strong quantitative skills – drawing from math, science and statistics. The new designation is an accurate depiction of the technical knowledge our students receive in the program.”

The MS Marketing degree at Texas McCombs is a 10-month graduate business degree open to all undergraduate majors. Students from a variety of work experience levels, from no experience to 5+ years, apply to the program. Cohort sizes are capped at 65 students each to enhance interaction with McCombs world-class faculty, and the curriculum includes a hands-on capstone experience solving business problems for participating companies. The MSM program emphasizes a focus in analytics and data-driven marketing.

The Master of Science in Marketing joins the Master of Science in Business Analytics and Master of Science in IT & Management as STEM-eligible degree offerings.

#TXMS Student Spotlight: Sam Malcolm MSBA 2019

Program:

Master of Science Bridge Program in Business Analytics

Student Name:

Sam Malcolm

Graduating Class:

Class of 2019

Undergraduate Alma Mater:

Penn State University, Economics

About Sam:

I grew up outside Philadelphia. After graduating from Penn State I moved to Austin where I’ve lived for the past nine years. Before joining the MSBA program I worked as a video producer creating content for brands like Infiniti, Dell, and Whole Foods. In my free time I love to ride my bike, see movies at the Alamo Drafthouse, and hang with my chihuahua/min-pin pup, Sabine. Also, I’m a die-hard Philadelphia 76ers fan. Let’s talk hoops!

Proudest Accomplishment:

I’m most proud of producing and performing in a weekly show with my improv comedy team. We’ve played to sold out houses every Friday night for the past few years and have multiple B. Iden Payne Award nominations under our belt. I’ve had the opportunity to perform at the Paramount Theatre here in Austin and guest at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York City. I get to start my weekends by performing comedy with some of my best friends, and I’m fortunate that people seem to really like what we do.

Why did you choose the MSBA Program?

I loved my undergrad courses on statistics and econometrics. And even though it was never my main professional focus, I realized that my favorite work experiences always involved business strategy and working with data. I wanted to pivot my career to focus on these skills. I knew the MSBA program at McCombs was highly renowned and its coursework was extremely thorough and well-rounded, so it felt like the perfect place for me.

What have the first 3 weeks of the program been like?

These three weeks have gone by very fast but have also somehow felt like three months. I’m honestly surprised by how much I’ve learned so far. We’ve already completed the first section of our Intro to Predictive Modeling class. In just two weeks we worked our way through an entire textbook and presented group projects where we applied predictive models (most of which we had been exposed to for the first time) to attempt to solve business problems with real world datasets.

What are you looking forward to most this year?

I’m most looking forward to getting to know my classmates better. A significant part of the curriculum, including the capstone project in the spring, involves working in teams. Everyone I’ve met in my program so far has been brilliant and kind. I’m excited to learn from and work with each of them.

Application Ready Resumes

When evaluating your application, our MS Programs Admissions Committees are looking for a holistic picture of your qualifications for a complete picture of your academic background as well as any internship or work experience you may be bringing to our programs.

Quality Matters

When creating your resume, the admissions committee should be able to get a clear picture of what your job duties were – do not assume they will know based on your job title. Take every opportunity on your application to illustrate just WHAT about your job is relevant to your academic goals. Even if your job title sounds impressive, what kind of company you worked for and how extensive your duties were is very relevant.  An impressive title with no experience relevant to the program you’re applying to may not go as far.

What you should know about work experience: Years, titles, and accomplishments are not, by themselves deciding factors. To help you provide us with a clear picture, here are our top tips for highlighting the quality and quantity of your work experience on your resume:

Master of Science Graduate School

  1. Tailor Content – You may have heard the adage that your resume should be tailored to your audience, which is true. But customizing your resume may be as easy reordering or swapping out bullet points. Avoid putting irrelevant experience on your resume unless it creates a large gap in employment.
  2. Emphasize Results – What results came from your position? Be specific to YOUR experience – if your resume could be carbon-copied onto another person’s resume, you should consider individualizing your tasks and duties on the job.
  3. Avoid Redundancy – Think of each line on your resume as a valuable piece of real estate. Put down distinct tasks you completed at your job, rather than the same version of the same task multiple times. Show off the variety of skills you may have needed in your position.
  4. Show Balance – We want to see a “balanced” candidate – someone who has been strong in the classroom and in the workplace while participating in extracurricular activities and having unique interests outside of work. Consider creating an “Additional” section to detail your activities and interests for use as a potential conversation starter.
  5. Utilize White Space – Don’t feel like you have to use every square inch of your resume. A good resume uses its white space so it can be read clearly and coherently.
  6. Enlist Proofreaders– Review, review, review. A single typo can ruin an otherwise perfect resume, so don’t hesitate to ask a friend (preferably one with excellent proofing skills) to look over your resume.
  7. Convey Personal Brand – Think of your resume like an advertisement for yourself. What will be the impression you leave your audience with? Your resume is like your brand, so make sure it paints a picture of how you want to be seen.

Remember, your resume is important, but it’s only one data point for you as a candidate. Years of work experience give only one sense of you as a candidate, so use your resume to make the quality of those years really stand out!

If you have any questions about applying to the Texas MS Programs, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us: TexasMSPrograms@mccombs.utexas.edu
