Alumni Spotlight: Dallas Killeen

Topics of Interest: Wpromote, social media, digital marketing, marketing agency, LGBTQ+

Aptly named, Dallas Killeen ’19, was born and raised in Dallas, Texas, and has since moved to Brooklyn, New York, where he works at Wpromote as a social media manager. Dallas began working in digital marketing right after graduation and began gravitating towards social media as a specialty. He believes platforms like Twitter and TikTok can steer cultural conversations in the internet age. Dallas has been able to fuse together a personal interest in pop culture and his professional work together as  a career. When Dallas isn’t working he has become a fan of Brooklyn’s milkshake selection, admiring the city’s public transportation and enjoying the outdoors.

During his time at UT, Dallas was a Canfield Business Honors, Plan II, and English student. His time in college allowed him to learn and experience various fields due to the flexibility that the Canfield Business Honors Program offered with the Plan II dual degree program. One of the many things that interested him in these various majors was how the particular topics could connect and drive language. Canfield Business Honors allowed him to study business and the arts and humanities and merge his two interests into a career in social media.

Throughout his career, Dallas has supported the LGBTQ+ community in his workplace. In his previous role, he chaired the LGBTQ+ employee resource group. This group’s goal was to create and foster an inclusive professional environment for the organization. Dallas has had the opportunity to develop educational initiatives for the whole company, including Pride presentations, pronoun guides, and organization get-togethers for community members. He is happy that his new organization also has an LGBTQ+ resource group. Dallas appreciates that it is becoming common in digital marketing organizations to recognize what is needed to be done to support staff members of all genders and sexualities.

When asked if he has any advice for current Canfield Business Honors students, he replied, “When making career or life decisions, you don’t always need to know the ‘right’ answer. In my experience, it’s enough to recognize something isn’t working and try something new. I have left industries and even moved cities because I wasn’t satisfied with my situation, and I have never regretted any of these big changes. In fact, I think the “wrong” choice would have been staying stagnant.”
