First-Gen Forward: Navigating the MBA Admissions Process – Q&A with Eric Martinez

First-generation (or first-gen, for short) college students are students whose parents or guardians have not had the opportunity to complete a bachelor’s degree in the United States. Many students whose parents have degrees from outside of the U.S. also identify as first-gen. First-Gen Longhorns—including first-gen faculty and staff—are a fundamental part of our campus and a strong and proud part of the UT family. There are almost 10,000 first-gen college students currently enrolled at the University of Texas. That’s one in four students!


My name is Eric Martinez, and I am a member of the Texas McCombs Full-Time MBA Class of 2024. At McCombs, I was happy to have had the opportunity to contribute to student organizations that promote inclusion in our community and the workplace, such as the Consortium for Graduate Study in Management, where I served as one of three liaisons, and the Engaged Queer and Ally (eQual) MBAs, where I served as co-president.

What were you doing before pursuing your MBA?

Prior to pursuing my MBA, I worked at a nonprofit association committed to advancing the field of neuroscience. While there, I gained skills in a variety of roles across program administration and digital strategy.

Where were you located before coming to Austin, TX?

Before coming to Austin, I was living in Washington, D.C.

What was your main motivation for pursuing an MBA?

After witnessing layoffs at my company in the fall of 2020, I revisited the idea that furthering my education would strengthen my candidacy for any job I might have in the future.

Having only ever worked in the nonprofit sector, I was originally interested in pursuing a Master of Public Administration but, upon doing more research, I learned the MBA could pivot my career altogether and give me the chance to work in a new sector I have never worked in before.

Why did you choose Texas McCombs for your MBA?

As a Houston native, I’ve always loved visiting Austin. So, when I sat down to do my initial research on MBA programs, I was excited to learn McCombs had one of the best MBA programs in the country.

Later, when I started to engage with members of MAC, I found students were going the extra mile to connect me with their classmates who shared similar backgrounds and career interests as me. Their transparency about their experiences in the program, their friendliness, and their willingness to help a stranger were very much appreciated.

Separately, it was easy to picture myself getting along with them both in and outside of the classroom.

Can you describe your experience applying to MBA programs as a first-gen student?

From beginning to end, applying to MBA programs was almost a two-year process for me. Once I’d learned about the value of an MBA, I spent a lot of time researching how it could help advance my career in the nonprofit sector.

Somewhere along the way, as I mentioned before, I realized the MBA could help me learn skills from the tech sector that I might later in my career bring back to a leadership position in the nonprofit sector. At that point, I started looking at which programs had a proven record of placing students into careers in the tech sector. After I’d narrowed my selections down to a handful of programs, it was time to prepare for the GMAT.

I chose to take the GMAT since I had no formal background in business, and I wanted to make up for my less than stellar undergraduate GPA. I’ve since learned that the admissions committee truly has no preference between submitting a GMAT or GRE score but, at the time, it was important to me that I at least reach the median score reported by the programs I was interested in.

After months of preparation, I finally achieved a score I was happy with and moved my focus to sourcing my letters of recommendation and writing my application essays.

Throughout this process, I was fortunate to have learned about the Consortium early enough that I could apply to multiple schools using their streamlined application. In addition to paying less in overall application fees, another perk of applying through the Consortium was that my recommenders only had to upload their letters in one place rather than each of the schools’ portals.

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced during the MBA admissions process as a first-gen student, and how did you navigate these challenges?

I think the biggest challenge I faced during the admissions process was understanding the recruiting timelines MBA students were working with. Since my parents are educators, and since I didn’t study business during undergrad, I didn’t know, for example, that consulting recruiting started early in the fall of your first year and wrapped by the end of January.

So, when it came to writing application essays that addressed my plan A and plan B recruiting goals, it was difficult to know whether my plans made any practical sense. It was only through talking with current students that I started to create a clearer picture of recruiting timelines for myself.

Did you seek any specific support or resources during the application phase, and if so, what were they? How did these resources help you along the way?

During the application phase, I attended many events hosted by the Consortium and by Reaching Out MBA. In addition to learning about each of their partner schools’ offerings, their events also helped provide me with key insights into each schools’ culture. Additionally, both the Consortium and ROMBA were helpful in providing information about potential scholarships that could help me fund the MBA.

How did you approach crafting your application essays, and were there any unique perspectives or strengths you brought as a first-gen applicant?

When I wrote my application essays, I was repeatedly explaining that my decision to follow a pre-med course of study during undergrad was a mistake. If I were to write them again, I think I would more elegantly explain that it was a necessary step to finding where my true strengths lie. After all, if everybody in the program had a background in business or shared the same kind of work experience, I don’t think discussions in the classroom would be nearly as engaging (or insightful.)

Can you share any tips or advice for other first-gen students who are considering applying to MBA programs? Were there any key lessons or insights you gained from the application process that you wish you had known earlier or that you believe would be helpful for other first-gen students?

Sure! I think the biggest piece of advice I have for prospective first-gen students is to make a list of all the career paths you’re potentially interested in exploring through an MBA. Then, talk to second-year students who have completed internships in those areas, and understand the responsibilities they held in those roles as well as the recruiting timelines they had to navigate. Doing these things will help you determine 1) whether a certain path is one you actually want to pursue, and 2) whether you’ll be able to explore two paths at the same time (for example, investment banking and consulting are very time intensive during the first semester.)

Lastly, one key lesson I gained from the application process is that – even if your work experience is nontraditional – there is space for you in the classroom. Don’t shy away from your unique perspective and remember that your skills are transferable to other industries.

The Class of 2025 at Texas McCombs reflects the growing enthusiasm for our programs in Austin, Dallas, and Houston. Applications across the MBA portfolio surged compared to last year, reaching a total exceeding 2,300 applications, and affirming the popularity of our dynamic community and unique learning environments.

Additionally, our class size has expanded by an impressive 9%, now with 509 incoming students. This growth not only underscores our status as a top choice for business education but also confirms the thriving demand for our programs across multiple campuses.

🏆 Unique Voices and Professional Excellence:

The incoming class celebrates a significant milestone: 25% of the class (as a % of U.S. Citizens & Permanent Residents) is composed of underrepresented minority (URM) students, marking a 7%-point increase. This achievement demonstrates our commitment to diversity and inclusivity, a commitment that extends across all our Texas McCombs MBA programs.

This growth isn’t limited to URM representation alone. Women in the class have also seen a substantial increase, rising to 33% (up 4% points), while the proportion of military veterans has grown to 15% (up 3% points) of the class.The importance of these developments cannot be overstated. The unique voices brought by our students enrich our learning environment and strengthen our academic and professional community. As we continue to grow, these perspectives collectively contribute to the excellence that defines the Texas McCombs MBA experience.

🏆 Cultivating Accessibility and Impact:

Texas McCombs actively contributes to the vision of propelling the University of Texas at Austin toward becoming the world’s highest-impact public university. This year, we welcomed more first-generation students, rising to 20% of the class (up 7% points). This increase spans all five of our MBA programs, demonstrating our commitment to providing accessible and impactful education, particularly to aspiring business leaders who are the first in their families to attend college.

It’s essential to recognize the importance of cultivating accessibility to make an MBA from a prestigious school attainable for first-generation college students. This reflects our dedication to fostering a welcoming community while nurturing the future leaders of business, regardless of their background.  

Full-Time MBA Class Profile 

Applications to the Full-Time MBA program increased, attracting over 1,800 applicants for a class of 241 students. This class brings with them a blend of experiences, with an average age of 29 and a strong average GPA of 3.46. Furthermore, 35% of students identify as female, 8% as LGBTQIA+, and 26% come from international backgrounds, representing 31 countries.  

In addition, the class demonstrates strong diversity within the United States, with 35% identifying as U.S. minorities and 18% as URM. Additionally, 14% of students have U.S. military service backgrounds. This year, we welcomed 37 Consortium members, 60 Forte Fellows, and 15 dual-degree students, further enriching the diversity and breadth of experiences within our class.   

Working Professional MBA Class Profile  

Though unique on their own (see class profiles below), the Working Professional MBA programs at Texas McCombs boast a set of compelling features that collectively define their excellence. With an average age of 31 and a middle 80% range spanning 26 to 37, these programs attract a unique cohort of students, each bringing with them a wealth of professional experience. On average, these students come with 8 years of experience. Impressively, 15% of the cohort possesses military experience, enriching the class with a unique perspective.  

Academically, our working professional students maintain a high level of excellence with an average GPA of 3.36. Working Professional and Executive MBA candidates have several options when considering how to complete the standardized test requirement as we accept GMAT, GMAT Focus, GRE, Executive Assessment (EA) score, or a test waiver. The incoming class brings an average GMAT score of 654 and an average GRE at 312.   

Executive MBA Class Profile

The Executive MBA program at Texas McCombs comprises 63 accomplished individuals, with 29% female representation. The class includes people of various backgrounds, with 42% identifying as U.S. minorities and 25% as URM, while 21% have backgrounds in U.S. military services. This experienced group boasts an average of 15 years in the workforce. Although standardized test scores aren’t required, the program values various factors, including leadership experience and personal impact, evident through their average 8.5 years of management experience.  

 

Notably, 27% of the class consists of first-generation students, offering unique perspectives. The class represents 21 cities in Texas and 9 states, with a strong presence from technology, healthcare, and energy sectors, enriching the Texas McCombs MBA experience

Celebrating Our Military MBAs This Veterans Day

This Veterans Day we are celebrating and honoring all of our active and former military MBA students.

Here at Texas McCombs, we understand that navigating the transition between military life and graduate education can be difficult – and we are here to help! All veterans and active military applicants qualify for an application fee waiver to any of our five MBA programs. Applicants also have the option of petitioning for a test waiver to waive the test score requirement.

Military applicants are also encouraged to take advantage of opportunities to connect with other veterans on campus and through virtual chats with members of the Texas Veterans in Business (TViB) student organization. TViB serves as the primary student organization for veterans pursuing an MBA. The organization offers plenty of opportunities to get to know other military students and to form a community with students who share a similar background. In addition, the Student Veterans Association regularly assists students with their relocation to Austin and offers programs to support military students’ success on campus.

Patrick Guide II
MBA at Houston ’25

Patrick served 6 years as a Marine Corps Engineer Officer and is a first-year student in our Weekend MBA at Houston program. Patrick attributes the success he has had in the program to the leadership and adaptability skills he learned throughout his time in the military and believes that his time at McCombs will further reinforce these skills and will prepare him well for an executive career post-MBA.

“I take pride in being a servant leader who is passionate about solving problems and serving people. I chose the McCombs MBA program because I believe this experience will position me for roles of greater impact. My desire is to play a role in creating a better tomorrow and McCombs is a crucial part of that pursuit.”

“The MBA program is a challenging adjustment, especially being years removed from school, but learning to adapt is a key skill I believe most veterans possess. Naturally, the discipline gained through military experience is also very beneficial. I came in understanding that networking is very important but I’ve never been exposed to as many opportunities and connections as with the McCombs program. There are many opportunities to mentor and to be mentored as well. Being comfortable working with very diverse groups of people is critical to being successful in the MBA environment.”

“Because my final years of service were in the reserves, I have experienced balancing multiple obligations at once. As a working professional in the MBA at Houston program, that skill set is definitely beneficial and being developed even further. Relearning how to be a student has been a tough but rewarding process. My experience in the program has already given me a more holistic perspective of business and society as a whole. I’ve learned leadership lessons that I know will be very applicable to solving future problems and I’ve been able to leverage my experience to contribute to thoughtful conversations considering a diverse range of perspectives.”

Patrick plans to pursue an executive career post-MBA, continuing on his path as a servant leader while combining skills from both his time in the military and his engineering background.

Eric Kasper
MBA at Dallas/Fort Worth ’24

Eric Kasper is a 4th generation service member who served as a 1st Lieutenant Infantry Officer in the Army. His great-grandfather served in the Army and his grandfather and both parents served in the Air Force.  Eric was stationed in Fort Benning for three years before serving on the General Staff supporting operations during the pandemic. He also served on the Commanding General of Fort Benning Staff. Eric says his shared military and MBA experience has enhanced his understanding of being an empathetic but impactful leader.

“I was medically retired from the Army after multiple surgeries for a knee injury. After three years of physical therapy, the medical staff made the decision to medically retire me from service. It was very challenging to know what career path to take after the decision to leave the military takes place. Thankfully I made strong connections with support staff in the VA benefits department, which allowed me to pursue a Master of Science in Economics. That master’s program propelled me to my first job at Texas Instruments which then led me to pursue an MBA.”

“I chose the Working Professional MBA at Dallas program because it provided me the ability to keep working while gaining further business acumen. As a military officer, you need to be able to lead from the front and display both the ability to learn and adapt as well as make decisions and move forward. In business school, especially in group case studies, the problem statement solutions are not readily known or easily identifiable. It takes the ability to learn from others and make decisive steps toward a shared goal to uncover the best solutions.”

“Being in the military is a humbling experience where leadership is rooted in practical experience and the reliance on your team or squad to provide their expertise and background. My MBA experience has enhanced my understanding of being an empathetic but impactful leader. McCombs has provided me the ability to understand macro-level business strategy through an analytical lens. The leadership experience I gained in the military allowed me to perform well under tight timelines and high-pressure situations. My military background proved to me that the right person in the right position can dramatically influence positive change for enterprise-level organizations.”

“My advice to anyone looking to apply is to talk with your VA representative as you go through out processing to verify your GI Bill and other benefits – have them physically print out documents to verify your eligibility.”

Brett Sheneman
MBA at Houston ’24

Brett Shenamen was a Captain in the U.S. Marine Corps who served as a Judge Advocate and Lead Prosecutor while stationed in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Before joining the military, he received his law degree from Michigan State University and is currently a Litigation Lawyer at ExxonMobil. His time in the military taught him how to work well with diverse groups of people and gave him the opportunity to positively impact his community.

“McCombs has both reinforced and changed my outlook on leadership. The curriculum is built around a business leader’s understanding of key fundamental components, including finance, statistics, marketing, and various management courses. In that sense, it changed my viewpoint. I always knew leaders needed to be competent; but a better, more well-rounded viewpoint and skillset is always valuable, especially when you surround yourself with truly qualified people.  An MBA, especially at McCombs, is such a well-rounded program that will instill an analytical skill set sure to distinguish you from your peers.”

“I chose McCombs because it is a leaders’ program with outstanding faculty and an excellent reputation. Primarily, I wanted to augment my legal skills with a robust business management understanding. The biggest takeaway is the pure quality of human beings at McCombs. The professors, staff, and students are just top-notch. That likemindedness inevitably leads to high-functioning collegiality.”

“I was lucky enough to begin my ‘dream job’ as an in-house lawyer at Exxon Mobil Corporation and plan to remain there after graduation, hopefully until retirement. My military background played a key role in eventually serving an organization with multiple stakeholders and a storied dedication to local communities throughout the nation.”

Brett believes that his time at McCombs has reinforced important lessons he learned while serving in the military–most especially, “strength through diversity of people and thought.”

Ross Desoto
MBA at Dallas/Fort Worth ’24

Ross posing in front of a plane Ross Desoto began his military experience serving in the Marine Corps. During his time, he has served as the Battalion Supply Officer for 2 WESTPAC deployments to Okinawa, Japan where he participated in numerous multinational exercises in various countries around INDOPACOM. He also led 275 Marines in Sailors in day-to-day supply and maintenance operations supporting all Marines on the west coast. During his time there, he had the pleasure of deploying with 100+ Marines aboard the USNS Lewis & Clark where they supported operations in the Middle East.

“As I planned to exit the Marine Corps, I knew that I wanted to move back to Dallas to be closer to family. Going to grad school was always a goal of mine and I began exploring MBA programs in Dallas. After doing my research and attending a few different school’s class visits I knew McCombs was the right fit for me. The Working Professional MBA at Dallas program fits my work schedule, and the caliber of fellow students and professors far exceeded every other program in Dallas. I knew it was the best program for me.”

“The culture in the Marine Corps and the culture at McCombs are vastly different and yet still the same. Within McCombs and the Marine Corps, there is a strong sense of personal accountability and a culture where ‘you are your brother’s keeper.’ I’ve found that I can rely on my study group and friends here at McCombs just like I relied on my Marines. We take care of one another and ensure we are all successful.”

“The most important lesson that I’ve learned while at McCombs is that just because you are a veteran and have done really hard things, you don’t have a market share on hard work. Regardless of background, everyone at McCombs has an impressive resume and has worked really hard to get where they are. It was humbling for me to look around during our first Austin Intensive and see the caliber of person that I was now classmates with and be so impressed with every student. From that point forward I was able to learn from everyone’s different experiences and value what everyone brings to the table.”

“Post-MBA I’m hoping to stay in finance and eventually pivot into private equity, with the hopes of eventually being a partner at a private equity firm. The military taught me to take information, analyze it, and make decisions effectively. Those skills translate directly to running a business and coupling those skills with what I learned at McCombs will hopefully lead to success.”

“The best advice I would give is to believe in yourself and go for it. A lot of veterans are hesitant about if they are capable of getting an MBA or are scared of the GMAT. It is hard to go back to grad school but it is not that hard and you have done harder things in the military. Study hard for the GMAT and tie your experience into your application because once you get your MBA you will continue to lead and make a difference anywhere you land.”

Jeffrey Caslen
MBA at Houston ’25

Jeffrey standing with Hook 'Em, our mascot. Jeffrey Caslen was commissioned as a Field Artillery Officer in 2009 after graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point. After his Officer Basic Course, he met his Platoon mid-deployment in Baghdad, Iraq. After returning from Iraq, He moved to Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where he changed his Branch to Public Affairs (PAO). As a PAO, he served in many roles, including Brigade Public Affairs Officer, Command Team Speechwriter, and Observer Coach/Trainer at the National Training Center, in Fort Irwin, California. Jeffrey transitioned out of Active Duty in 2020 and is currently a Major in the Individual Ready Reserve.

“The military prides itself on its diversity and having an organization that reflects the American population. While in the Army, I learned how to lead teams of motivated people with diverse backgrounds and skill sets to achieve a common goal. In the Business world, many leadership challenges seem to have a ‘no-win’ scenario. There are many variables involved that I did not need to worry about as a military leader. By maintaining my ethical leadership style I developed in the Army, I know I can hold my head high regardless of my decisions when I become a business leader.”

“I have noticed a few similarities between the Army and the McCombs culture. One is that we bond through hardship, and become extremely close, building a lifetime bond. Additionally, the focus on team vs individuality is similar between the Army and McCombs. Although this is my MBA, It is unachievable without relying on my peers’ strengths to help me through the program. Texas McCombs is amazingly diverse, and leaning on my classmates’ incredible skill sets for projects and collaboration is a skill I learned as an Army Officer.”

“Everyone has a unique and valuable experience. Although my experience in the Army is valuable to me, all of my classmates have impactful experiences that allow me to grow through their storytelling and mentorship. Seeing how great and accomplished my classmates are really humbles and motivates me to become the best version of myself so I can live up to their expectations.”

For those looking to apply to McCombs, Jeffrey offers some advice. “Take your time and find a program that best fits your end goals and your family. Each university has a helpful Veteran’s Department to help you with your VA applications and help quell any concerns. UT’s Veteran’s Department answered all my questions and helped me feel confident that I would be taken care of during my time as an MBA student.”

Chris Stafford Reignites MBA at Houston eQual to Foster Community for LGBTQ+ Students

Chris Stafford, MBA at Houston Class of 2024, is reigniting the Weekend MBA program’s eQual chapter, an organization aimed at fostering community and solidarity among LGBTQ+ MBA students. 

“When I started the Fall semester in Houston, I learned that eQual Houston had fizzled away during COVID-19 and needed fresh blood to give it a restart,” Chris says. “I know how important it is for community engagement and representation both internally and externally. I think it’s really important to have LGBTQ+ representation in the program and also for students to get involved in the local LGBTQ+ community.”

Alongside completing his MBA, Chris is employed at ExxonMobil. Prior to his MBA journey, he graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) in 2010 and served as an Officer in the Navy Reserves.

“The ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’ policy (DADT) was still in place while I was a Midshipman at USMMA and for the beginning part of my time as an Officer in the Reserves, this policy required that I keep my identity as a gay man a secret and live my life ‘in the closet,’” Chris says. “I actually wrote my admissions essay to McCombs about the repeal of DADT and how it shaped my career. Serving under the DADT policy was not easy and surely presented lots of obstacles, but I am a stronger person for it.”

Chris says his background in maritime operations and trading influenced his decision to apply to the Weekend MBA at Houston program.

“I really want to grow my business acumen and enhance my understanding of different aspects of business that I have yet to be exposed to. My employer is very supportive of me getting my MBA and I am really hoping to bring back to the office what I am learning at McCombs,” he says. “When trying to decide on where to go for my MBA, there were a few options locally here in Houston I was considering. I wanted a strong academic program with a large network, great reputation and prestige and a big school atmosphere.”

After settling in at the program, Chris and his classmates got in contact with the Dallas and Austin chapters of eQual, who were instrumental in helping reboot the organization for the Houston program.

“We plan to link up with both Austin and Dallas eQual groups more in the future and try to host some joint events,”  Chris says. “We announced to our classmates on National Coming Out Day that eQual was back and that started the buzz. We had significant interest and were super excited to get it going.”

For the future of Houston’s eQual endeavors, Chris and other organizers in the group plan to engage with the local community and increase awareness about topics of diversity and inclusion.

“We plan to get involved in local philanthropic and volunteer endeavors, for example the Houston Pride Parade and Montrose Center,” he says. “We plan to bring in guest speakers to speak to eQual about inclusion and diversity in the workplace, and hopefully get local executives that identify as LGBTQ+ to speak to our cohorts about their experiences in the corporate world.”

Ultimately, Chris’ goal is to uplift and support the McCombs — and extended — LGBTQ+ community in both the corporate world and their academic ventures.

“Our main goal is to be a voice for the students in the Houston MBA program, especially those of us that identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community and our allies. We strive to protect and promote an inclusive and safe environment and celebrate diversity in all forms within the program. We want to leverage LGBTQ+ alumni to help mentor and recruit students that are a part of the eQual group, as well as act as a recruiting tool for the admission team to continue to admit diverse classes in the future.”

The 5th Annual Elevate Conference Introduces Inaugural Excellence in DEI Award

This year Texas McCombs celebrated the 5th year of the Elevate: Diversity Equity and Inclusion Conference, at Rowling Hall on February 10. The annual Elevate Conference is one of the most significant channels for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) across the Texas McCombs MBA program. Founded by 2019 alumnae Ashley Fox and DeAndrea Staes, the conference has grown to be a full community-wide event. This year’s Elevate co-chairs, Azzy Francis, Fernando Galindo, Lauren Vague, and Oshane Mcrae hoped to evoke a different perspective to DEI with the new theme, “Let’s Dance.”

“I recalled the quote from one of my classes: ‘Diversity is being asked to the party. Inclusion is being asked to dance,’” Fernando Galindo says. “It stood out to me and felt like a great way to encourage people to come and join us in this dance.” 

The team wanted to communicate a joyful, fun, expressive environment where people are unafraid to participate and share.

“‘Let’s Dance’ to me means celebrating diversity, breaking down barriers, and embracing discomfort,” says Azzy Francis. DEI work can be awkward, much like middle school dances. You might feel unsure of yourself, out of your comfort zone, or like you don’t know the steps. But just like at those dances, the key is to embrace the awkwardness, find your own rhythm, and engage with one another in kindness & respect. The more you participate and engage, the more confident and comfortable you will become. And before you know it, you’ll be moving to the beat of inclusivity and creating meaningful change.”

“We hope that this brings us to a place where we are engaging respectfully, rather than not engaging due to fear or discomfort,” Lauren says. “Asking attendees to dance means that we are encouraging all of us to end up in a place where we can all be a little more ourselves, and be seen for who we are.”

The conference featured keynote speakers Iris Diaz, Chief Marketing Officer of the Dallas Mavericks, and Tynesia Boyea-Robinson, President and CEO of CapEQ. Alongside their speeches, there were also student-led panels and various discussion-led sessions throughout the day. Oshane Mcrae, Elevate co-chair and Full-Time MBA student, says the Elevate chairs chose the keynote speakers for their humanness, their charisma, their talents of storytelling, and the bravery of their approach to their careers and changing the world.

“No one person can improve DE&I outcomes on their own, it takes a community, it takes institutional buy-in, it takes outspoken leaders, it takes quiet ones as well,” Oshane says. “It takes sustained effort over time to change processes, to change norms, and to shift core practices.”

“We wanted to make the sessions very interactive,” says Lauren. “We chose Aurora Archer, Meme Styles, and our very own Zerina Hamulic as facilitators. Most of the sessions were discussion based, with our hope being that we could leverage the expertise of our attendees and also make sure that they got to ask the questions and have the discussions they wanted.” They also hosted student-led sessions with current Texas McCombs MBA students to provide their classmates a platform to share their stories and educate their community and peers.

The Elevate team also introduced the Inaugural Ashley Fox and DeAndrea Staes Excellence in DEI award to celebrate students that are making a difference in their leadership at McCombs.  

“It was an award intended to honor student leadership & innovation in DE&I, in the spirit of Ashley Fox and DeAndrea Staes who were the original founders of Elevate,” says Oshane. “We opened it up to the students to nominate their peers and make the case for each nominee.”

Full-Time MBA ’23

Yessica Bravo, Consortium member, and Full-Time MBA student was presented the first Excellence in DEI award by the conference’s founders, Ashley Fox, and DeAndrea Staes. Yessica says it was an honor to win this award, and that while it can be easy to be hard on herself, she ultimately trusts herself and her ability to bring brilliant people together.

“Good work is never done alone. I’m incredibly fortunate to have sat alongside peers deeply passionate about ensuring more students from diverse backgrounds experience McCombs,” Yessica says. “Alexis Allen, Muna Rehma, Getaneh Mekonen, Craig Perry, Matt Wong, Amanda Garcia, Usjid Hameed, and the next gen of leaders- yall are the vessels. We did great work together. I’m so proud of what we accomplished in our short time here.”

Yessica says one of the best ways to practice improving DEI circumstances is to show up. “For a long time, I didn’t participate in DEI discussions because I was afraid of what I didn’t know, I was worried I didn’t hold the correct language or I didn’t know everything about what I perceived to be sensitive topics. My fear was keeping me away from learning,” Yessica says. “The opportunity is all around us. Whether it’s at a conference like Elevate, Consortium’s monthly storytelling sessions, GWiB’s allyship roundtable, or the Food and Beverage Club’s dinners. The opportunity to connect and learn from people different than us exists. Show up.”

Black Graduate Business Association (BGBA) is a student organization founded in 1985. BGBA members represent a variety of academic concentrations and political, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Members’ business interests range from the public to the private sector, entrepreneurship, and national and international markets in various areas of the business world. As a professional organization of predominantly Black students pursuing an MBA, the BGBA’s purpose is to provide a nexus through fellowship to broaden, enhance and promote the successful futures of its members.

Coming In for National Coming Out Day

The MBA Insider content below is written by eQual MBA Students.  Engaged Queer and Ally (eQual) MBAs is one of 40+ student organizations at Texas McCombs. 


In honor of National Coming Out Day, Texas McCombs is excited to celebrate the students who are “coming in” to their identities and the community shared amongst our Engaged Queer and Ally (eQual) MBAs.

Coming out is a significant moment in a queer person’s life but it’s important to note that the process of coming out is not finite. As an LGBTQ+ individual enters new spaces, they constantly make choices about sharing their identity with the people around them.

Most students in the McCombs MBA program are coming back to school after spending years in the workforce. It’s an ongoing activity to share aspects of yourself with new classmates, study team members, or during the process of recruiting for full-time positions of internships. eQual is focused on creating welcoming spaces and supporting our students as they navigate these experiences!

This year the organization is celebrating National Coming Out Day with two days of programming including a Storytelling Hour hosted by the Consortium for Graduate Study in Management (CGSM) where current LGBTQ+ students and faculty will share stories of journey and discovery, as well as a community event with local alumni and the Graduate Business Council (GBC).

Who are eQual MBAs?

The student-run organization has grown to include over 60 members, including allies, and many of the members are involved in other affinity organizations and diverse programming opportunities.

In the past year eQual has been active in the following ways:

  • Student-led group chats for applicants interested in LGBTQIA+ at McCombs
  • Mentorship program with undergraduate QBSA (Queer Business Student Association) to foster learning, development, and knowledge-sharing between LGBTQ+/allied students and professionals
  • Alumni panel at the Elevate D&I conference on developing community and experiencing allyship in the workplace
  • Student and faculty attendance at Reaching Out MBAs (ROMBA) 2022 Conference in Washington D.C.
  • Allyship workshop, co-hosted with the Graduate Women in Business (GWIB) featuring Mx. Shane Whalley (ze/hir/hirs)

Celebrating Pride with eQual MBAs at McCombs

Happy Pride Month! This June we are celebrating members of our LGBTQIA+ MBA community and talking to Full-Time MBA student Lindsey Scheinthal, co-president of eQual MBAs, about pronouns, allyship, and living authentically.

eQual MBAs at McCombs is a social and career networking student organization made up of members, friends, and supporters of the LGBTQ+ community. They are dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion within the Texas McCombs community.

Representation and Allyship 

eQual focuses a lot on educating people on pronoun usage and allyship by hosting workshops throughout the year to create a more inclusive environment. Since moving into the virtual space, members of eQual have advocated for adding pronouns to Zoom names. Even if you are cisgender (meaning you identify as the gender assigned at birth), adding pronouns to your bios, zoom names, or email signatures signifies that you are an ally and makes others feel included.

“For me, representation is everything. I believe it saves lives and makes people know that they are not alone.” says Lindsey. “I think that’s really important for all of us because when you have more representation you’re able to implement everything else a little bit easier.”

Inclusion and acceptance from others means a lot to Lindsey. She says she sometimes wonders if people know she’s gay and would accept her if they knew.

“My favorite thing is seeing people wear the eQual t-shirt with the rainbow longhorn,” says Lindsey. “You know, we just make assumptions about people…[you think] that person might not like me because I’m gay, and I’m nervous to say something. But then I go to class the next day and they’re rocking the eQual t-shirt, and how great of a feeling that is to see them wearing it.”

There is no way to be a perfect ally, Lindsay says. To her, it’s someone who is asking questions and is pushing themselves to continuously learn and be better.

“Everyone has a different idea of what an ally looks like, and I think it’s difficult to be the perfect ally. But I think as long as you’re trying to be better and listen and change and really hear the person next to you and where they’re coming from, that’s all we can ask for,” says Lindsey.

“I try to do my best to educate people. I really believe in representation. I try to continue to educate myself, because everything is constantly evolving.”

Living Authentically

While the LGBTQIA+ community at McCombs is a small group, Lindsey likes to think of eQual as small but mighty and hopes to encourage more LGBTQIA+ members to apply to business school.

Lindsey has been out since she was 17 and says it hasn’t always been easy. She has dealt with micro-aggressions, stereotypes, and mistreatment from others. To overcome this she lives by Michelle Obama’s famous words: “When they go low, we go high.”

“It hasn’t been easy but it’s their loss. I know I’m a great friend, I’m a great employee, and if [someone] is choosing not to be nice to me because of this one little aspect of my life, then it’s their loss,” she says.

“Life is too short, I’m just trying to enjoy every moment and like just being myself,” says Lindsey. “I don’t want to hide who I am ever.”

Pride Celebrations in Austin

At Texas McCombs, we strive to create a supportive community by partnering with Reaching Out MBA (ROMBA), a nonprofit organization that focuses on empowering LGBTQIA+ business students. In 2014 McCombs became one of the inaugural school partners of the ROMBA fellowship, which grants LGBTQ+ MBA Fellows with a minimum $20,000 scholarship and access to leadership programming. ROMBA also hosts events and an annual conference to educate and connect LGBTQIA+ business students through C-suite panels, workshops, competitions, receptions, and career fairs. This year the conference, which is the world’s largest gathering of LBGTQIA+ business students and alumni, will take place in Austin in October.  

Austin has many Pride Month celebrations around town in June but its official Pride festival and parade is held in August– this also gives the UT Austin student population, a very active part of the LGBTQIA+ community, the opportunity to volunteer and participate.

Shams Mammadli was born on the coast of Baku, Azerbaijan. She grew up there for most of her childhood and later, her education would take her all over the world.

As MBA graduation approaches, Shams is reflecting on her time at McCombs and how her upbringing shaped the worldview she brings to the MBA program.

An International Perspective

Multiculturalism is embedded into the very roots of Azerbaijan. Its culture is a fusion of two factors: the Soviet Union’s 70-year influence on the country and its Eastern European geography. It’s the combination of these two factors that provided Shams with fluency in four languages.

“Imagine growing up in a family where you speak Azeri to your grandma but Russian to your mom; a childhood where your school classes are held in Russian, but you only watch Turkish cartoons; you grow up in a city with mosques, synagogues, and churches.”

The omnipresent immersion of different cultures molded Shams’ perspective of the world to this day. “It becomes a part of you,” she says. “I feel truly fortunate for having experienced such a level of multiculturalism this early and having seen the benefits it poses to society.”

Shams graduated from Azerbaijan State University of Economics with a bachelor’s degree in International Economic Relations in 2014. Aside from Baku, Shams has lived in Moscow, London, and Kansas in pursuit of her education.

“I learned very early on how to feel at home anywhere in the world.”

If There’s a Will, There’s a Way

Regardless of location, there is one common link that has driven Shams all her life: entrepreneurship. 

“It’s what gets me excited: To hear others build something and turn their ideas into reality.”

A few years ago, Shams took a leap of faith and started Precious Flowers Houston, an online boutique specializing in floral arrangements packaged in customized boxes. Here, she became familiar with the startup process from start to finish, namely, “designing the website, marketing, networking and building relationships with vendors, communicating with customers, and creating the arrangements.”

This startup allowed her entrepreneurial drive to blossom, but she attributes her biggest lesson learned as something more personal:

“Following your dreams is always worth it, and if there’s a will, there’s a way.”

Currently, Shams is a financial analyst at Leschaco, a transportation and logistics company based out of Germany. Although corporate finance is different from individual entrepreneurship, Shams says her entrepreneurial experience is a “useful foundation” to set her up for future success.

Shams’ Why McCombs 

In 2015, through the Diversity Immigrant Visa program, Shams and her husband moved to the United States. 

“As someone who has been traveling quite frequently and is always ready for a new challenge, I didn’t think twice before leaving everything behind and moving to the other side of the world.”

However, Shams’ #WhyMcCombs moment almost happened back in 2014, when she was still living in Baku, Azerbaijan. She had started an application for her MBA degree at Texas McCombs, but never got around to submitting it because the prospect of it seemed, “so far and unattainable.” Nevertheless, be it a coincidence or destiny, Shams finally submitted and got admitted to the Texas McCombs MBA at Houston program in 2019, after she moved to the city.

Some of the key factors that played a role in Shams’ decision to apply to Texas McCombs were the university’s prestige and the Longhorn network:

“Apart from being a top-ranked program, it’s really the people that make it an amazing place to be — the admissions office, professors, classmates, and the great alumni network that is always willing to help and support.”

Shams attended information sessions held by other universities, but says that she quickly knew McCombs stood out and would be her home. 

“Right from the start, I could tell Texas McCombs is a community of people that genuinely value diversity and are passionate about doing incredible things for the world.”

The Road Ahead

While at McCombs, Shams has worked on multiple projects that have accelerated her knowledge of the type of work she’d like to do after graduation.

Shams says that MBA+ projects have allowed her to, “try on different hats,” and decide whether a specific venture would be something she’d want to pursue full-time. This past summer, she completed a mergers & acquisitions MBA+ Project in the healthcare industry, and currently she is working on a  sustainability project for United Airlines — an experience that’s completely new to her. 

“I believe McCombs provides all the resources for those who want to make most out of their experience.”

With graduation just around the corner, Shams is planning to pursue a corporate finance opportunity with a tech company focusing on product development and strategy. However, true to her first true passion, she’s hoping to pursue another entrepreneurial venture sometime down the road.

Texas McCombs Wins National Black MBA Association Case Competition

Every year MBA students have the opportunity to participate in case competitions and challenges. Student teams are given a business problem to analyze, and they present their recommendations to a panel of experts who offer industry-specific feedback and select winners.

The 2020-2021 case competition season kicked off in September 2020 when Texas McCombs MBA students Christopher Williams, Sean Stallings, Tyrone Smith, and Ingrid Zagzebski competed in the annual National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA) Graduate Case Competition and took home the first place prize.

McCombs teams have had strong showings at the NBMBAA competition in the past,  but this was the first time the Texas McCombs MBA team won first place.

In 2019, Christopher Williams and Sean Stallings competed with another MBA team. They persevered to come back this year and win it all. Chris is a former transportation engineer, and Sean was a tech consultant, so they formed  a strong foundation and were looking for a  well-rounded team. They recruited Tyrone Smith, who had experience in automotive sales, and Ingrid Zagzebski, who had worked in marketing, to join their team.

We felt like we could do better a second time around and decided to compete this year. We recruited two other team members — Tyrone, another second year student, and Ingrid, a first year student. They brought energy, creativity and a wealth of automotive and marketing experience to the team.

The Competition

For over 25 years, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has partnered with the National Black MBA Association to provide a challenging case for students from top business schools to compete for $50,000 in cash prizes and employment opportunities. The competition challenges MBA teams to dissect complex, real-world business problems, come up with a thorough solution and present their findings to a panel of Fortune 500 executives.

The McCombs MBA team, along with over 30 other teams from universities around the country, were faced with the need to problem-solve innovative digital retailing solutions and car delivery options. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 competition was hosted virtually, which added another challenge for students. 

What was the key to the McCombs team’s success? Sean thinks it was their team’s diversity and experience.

 I think our diverse backgrounds were a strong differentiator for the judges.

A big reason McCombs did so well that was Chris and I competed last year. Having made some mistakes, we internalized a lot of the judge’s feedback. We also learned from other top-tier MBA school presentations, and felt we could outdo them. It didn’t hurt to have completed coursework in Corporate Strategy, Tech Strategy and Operations — those frameworks definitely set us apart from other first year heavy teams.

Even with having a strong team and prior case competition experience, the group had to overcome  a set of challenges. For one, there was the issue of time management: How can four Full-Time MBA students juggle their coursework, extracurriculars, and personal life on top of this competition? Tyrone, who is also a professional Olympic athlete, was still training and competing while the team was in the beginning weeks of planning and strategizing. Because of that, he correlates his team’s overall success to their synergy in those crucial early stages.

It feels absolutely incredible to be a part of this team. We worked our butts off with all of us having exceptionally full plates. We started meeting before school started and myself, being a professional Olympic athlete, I was still training and competing during the first few weeks. This team covered for one another excellently and we pulled together in perfect harmony

A First Place Victory

The team worked hard and made sacrifices. Their efforts paid off abundantly — in addition to new employment and networking opportunities, the team was awarded a $25,000 scholarship. Here’s how they felt when they got the news:

I literally screamed when we won although, if I’m being completely honest, I very much expected us to win. Chris and Sean competed last year and had a solid idea of the quality of presentation they would take. I was confident that knowledge — combined with the insider info, recommendations and our expertise in tech —would be difficult to beat.

For me, as far as new doors, the finalists were all invited to speak with McKinsey&Co., and I had an excellent one-on-one info session with them. I was encouraged to apply and they genuinely seem interested in my experience and story, something they would not have been exposed to without the competition.

I felt AMAZING. Our team put in a lot of effort to prepare for the case and bring data-backed, well researched and feasible recommendations to address the case challenge. 

The scholarship from NBMBAA & FCA has had an immediate impact on my financial health, helping to reduce my student loan liabilities. More broadly, the case allowed me to meet and network with other minority MBA students and continue building my network.

I was speechless!  It felt like I was inside of a dream. After the shock wore off, I wanted to scream and shout, but I was sitting at my gate at the ATX airport and didn’t feel like it was the place to make a scene.

 The scholarship money was a big reason why we signed up to compete last year; however, as we got further along in the process, it was less about the money and more about proving ourselves on the national stage. The $25,000 will be split up evenly amongst the four teammates and will be used to pay down some loans upon graduation.

Advice For Future MBAs

If you’re a current or future MBA student interested in participating in next year’s National Black MBA Association Graduate Case Competition, here are some final words of advice curated by the team. 

Get ready early.

The case is typically released in mid-August. I attribute a large part of our success to preparation and giving ourselves enough time to fully flesh out our ideas.

From the start, we came to a consensus on expectations. We knew we wanted to position ourselves for a win and decided to dedicate several hours each week to prepare. Even so, we stretched ourselves to make things work. We had a great team dynamic and trusted each other to get the work done. That made it easy to prioritize and focus on specific aspects of the project, rather than having to worry about doing everything individually.

Be meticulous and say on task.

My advice is to have someone on the team who is meticulous about planning and have them take charge. Chris did an amazing job getting us started early to plan, so we were always a head of the curve. When the inevitable, unforeseeable things came up and we had to miss a meeting or change a time, it was okay because we were one-to-two weeks ahead of schedule.

Everyone is going to have to sacrifice at some point, and when it’s your turn, don’t hesitate. Show the team that you are in this to WIN — not just to make the final, or hopefully top 3, but to WIN.
