The McCombs School of Business BBA Advisory Board was formed in 2008 to assist the dean, associate dean of undergraduate programs, faculty, and staff of the McCombs School of Business in achieving and maintaining “best of class” status for the BBA programs. This diverse group of individuals ensures the integrity of the BBA Advisory Board mission by supporting the strategy planning, curricula, external affairs, alumni engagement, fundraising efforts, and student placement. The Executive Committee receives rolling applications throughout the year with consideration for membership in the spring. The new members of the BBA Advisory Board begin their three-year terms the following September.

Alumni and Interns Celebrate McCombs in San Antonio

The San Antonio Chapter invited all alumni, new graduates, and current students interning for the summer out for an evening of gaming and networking. This event was the final event in our series of summer celebrations hosted nationwide. This was a great opportunity for San Antonio alumni to give new grads and summer interns advice on living and working in San Antonio. Attendees had a great time networking over food, beverages, and games at Andretti Indoor Karting & Games. See photos from the event here.

San Antonio Celebration

Announcing the 2019 Rising Stars: Kovid O. Gupta, Lance T. Loeffler, and Carlos A. Whitaker

The McCombs School of Business is proud to announce Kovid O. Gupta, BBA ’10, Lance T. Loeffler, BBA ’99, MBA ’04, and Carlos A. Whitaker, BBA ’00, MPA ’00, as the 2019 Alumni Rising Stars. The Rising Star Award, established in 2004-05, recognizes young alumni who have experienced professional success and have shown exemplary service to the Texas McCombs Alumni Network.

Kovid O. Gupta Kovid O. Gupta, BBA ’10
CEO, Kovid Gupta Films
Director of Investor Relations, Indus Management Group

Kovid Gupta is an author, screenwriter, and filmmaker. In 2010, he received his BBA, BA, and BS from The University of Texas at Austin and in 2015, graduated with an MBA from Cornell University. In 2017, he was featured by Forbes Magazine on the Forbes Asia 30 Under 30 List, along with receiving the Glorious India Award for successful Non-Resident Indians. As a screenwriter, he has written over 1,000 episodes for some of India’s most successful television shows including Balika Vadhu and Bade Acche Lagte Hain. He was also the assistant director of the box office hit film “Prem Ratan Dhan Payo” and served as the head of business development for Vinod Chopra Films and Film Companion. Kovid is also the author of two bestselling non-fiction books, “Kingdom of the Soap Queen: The Story of Balaji Telefilms,” published by HarperCollins, and “Redrawing India: The Teach For India Story,” published by Random House. In 2018, he founded Kovid Gupta Films with the mission of creating path-breaking cinema and television.

 

Lance T. LoefflerLance T. Loeffler, BBA ’99, MBA ’04
Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Halliburton

Lance Loeffler serves as executive vice president and chief financial officer at Halliburton. In this role, he leads the company’s financial strategy as well as its financial functions, including financial planning and analysis, accounting and financial reporting, tax, internal assurance, treasury, corporate development, and investor relations.

Mr. Loeffler joined Halliburton in 2014 as vice president of corporate development, with global leadership responsibilities for the company’s strategic merger and acquisition activities. He then served as vice president of Investor Relations and was responsible for the development and implementation of Halliburton communication strategies for the investment community.

Prior to joining Halliburton, Mr. Loeffler held director positions at Deutsche Bank Securities, Inc., and UBS Investment Bank, where he focused on the firms’ oil and gas clients.

Mr. Loeffler holds an MBA with concentrations in finance and accounting and a bachelor’s degree in finance from Red McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin.

 

Carlos A. WhitakerCarlos A. Whitaker, BBA ’00, MPA ’00
Managing Director, Global Markets
Credit Suisse

Carlos Whitaker is a managing director of Credit Suisse in the Global Markets division, based in New York City. Within Global Markets, he is head of New York Equities Advisory Sales and manages a team that distributes primary and secondary equities to institutional clients. Mr. Whitaker is responsible for developing strong client relationships, profitably growing revenues, selling initial public offerings (IPOs) and secondary offerings, as well as cross-selling the bank’s other products and services. His clients are predominantly large sophisticated hedge funds that employ a myriad of investment strategies including long/short equity, event driven, risk arbitrage, and global macro. In 2010, Mr. Whitaker was awarded the Investment Banking Outstanding Achievement Award by Credit Suisse for his skill in leveraging the bank’s resources to complete a large transaction that was outside of his geographic and product coverage area for one of the bank’s key clients.

Mr. Whitaker began his career at Credit Suisse in 2000 as an analyst in the Investment Banking division. He is a core part of the bank’s recruiting team for the Analyst and Associate programs, and has served on the promotion committees for vice president, director, and managing director level candidates.

Mr. Whitaker graduated from The University of Texas at Austin, where he received his BA from the Plan II Honors Program, BBA in Accounting, and MPA. Mr. Whitaker currently serves on the New York for McCombs board and on the Rising Stars Capital Management board, which is a Houston-based nonprofit organization focused on increasing African American representation in the finance industry.

The McCombs School will recognize the Rising Stars at the Hall of Fame ceremony in November. The event will also recognize the 2019 Hall of Fame Inductees.

McCombs Summer Brunch in the Big Apple

The NYC Chapter had a great turn out at their annual brunch hosted at La Palapa. The celebration brought out members of the McCombs community from all areas including alumni, 2019 graduates who just moved to the city to start their career, current students completing their summer internship, and members of the New York for McCombs Council. McCombs staff members, Katie Lewis and Christopher Ruggeri, also came into town from Texas to join the festivities. See more photos from the event on Flickr.

The event was a major success and gave attendees the opportunity to reminisce on their time at McCombs while also swapping tips and tricks about living and working in the city that never sleeps!

Texas McCombs Celebration in the Nation’s Capital

The D.C. Chapter invited all alumni, new grads, and student interns out for a taste of Texas at Hill Country BBQ. The reception was the perfect opportunity for current students to talk with local alumni about tips and tricks for navigating the D.C. area.

Kudos to our D.C. Chapter Leader Jeff Marusak, MBA ’08, for putting on a great event!

Alumni and Interns Celebrate Summer in the ATL

The Atlanta Chapter hosted a reception at Chido & Padre’s for all alumni, recent grads new to the area, and current students in town for their summer internships. Attendees had a wonderful time networking and discussing what it’s like to live and work in the Atlanta area. McCombs staff representatives, Crystal Tidmore and Christopher Ruggeri, came in from Texas to meet and greet the b-school alumni and interns! See more photos from the event here.

Atlanta Summer Celebration

Summer Celebration in the Emerald City

The Seattle Chapter welcomed new graduates, interns, and Alison Fiorenza from the Texas McCombs Alumni team to their summer celebration at Queen Anne Beer Hall. The longhorns filled the restaurant as they networked and shared stories about the ins-and-outs of working in the Emerald City.

We would like to thank our chapter leaders Beth Hood, MBA ‘18, and Eric Strow, MBA ‘16, for helping put it all together!

Alumni and Summer Interns Network in Portland

The Portland Chapter hosted a reception for local alumni, recent McCombs graduates, and current students interning in Oregon for the summer. The group gathered at Ankeny Tap & Table where alumni and students had the opportunity to talk about the ins-and-outs of working and living in the Portland area. This was a great opportunity for current students and young alumni to network and connect with the McCombs Alumni Network – 2,000 miles away from Texas!

The Chicago Chapter Gathers at The Highline in River North

The Highline in River North was the perfect restaurant for the Chicago Chapter’s Summer Celebration! Robin Vallilee from the Texas alumni team joined the McCombs community as they had fun bonding over drinks and appetizers. See more photos from the event here!

London Chapter Summer Celebration at Rabobank

The Texas McCombs London Chapter and UK Texas Exes Chapter welcomed all alumni to a reception honoring recent graduates and current students interning in the city for the summer. The event was co-sponsored by Rabobank and featured a presentation by Jane Foley, head of FX strategy at Rabobank. After the presentation and Q & A session, attendees enjoyed networking and talking about the day-to-day life of living and working in London.

We would like to recognize the McCombs London Chapter Leader Tom Li, BBA ’05 for putting on such a great event and thank you to Rabobank for co-sponsoring the evening!
