McCombs Alumnus Jim Lee, BBA ’88, MBA ’92, with his wife, Amy, and their two sons.
The University of Texas McCombs School of Business alumnus James H Lee, BBA ’88, MBA ’92, recently announced a $600,000 pledge to the school’s Wall Street for McCombs program. Lee, who was one of the first McCombs students to participate in the Wall Street for McCombs internship program, sees this as a full-circle moment.
In 1991, Lee was selected by then-Dean Robert Witt to join the school’s inaugural group of Ambassadors to Wall Street, which eventually evolved into the Wall Street for McCombs program. He later began his career working in mergers and acquisitions at Lehman Brothers and First Boston.
“I’m incredibly grateful to the McCombs School of Business and Dean Robert Witt, who helped launch my career when he selected me and four other MBA students to travel to New York to meet with the nation’s top investment banks,” Lee said. “That trip changed everything—all five of us received important offers from some of Wall Street’s leading firms. My time at McCombs shaped who I am today, and I’m proud to support the next generation of students as they embark on their own careers in our U.S. capital markets.”
The gift provided by Lee and his wife, Amy, will be used to create a permanent endowment to benefit undergraduate or graduate students who comprise the winning team in the spring Investment Banking Practicum course, which is required as part of the Wall Street for McCombs leadership program.
Xavier Sztejnberg, director of Wall Street for McCombs and assistant professor of instruction in finance, said the gift will help the program continue to provide important opportunities for future graduates.
“The Wall Street for McCombs Leadership Program is deeply grateful to Jim for his generous support and commitment to excellence, which will make this award possible for the winning team in the WSFM Investment Banking Practicum course,” Sztejnberg said. “His contribution will continue to position WSFM as the pre-eminent program of its kind in the country.”
Wall Street for McCombs was founded in 2013 to build a pipeline of talent for investment banking. It was later expanded to include other industries through the New York for McCombs program. Lee hopes these programs will encourage more students to pursue careers in our capital markets – whether on Wall Street or closer to home.
“Texas is home to some of the brightest minds in business and finance, with one in ten public companies and a growing share of the Fortune 500 based in the state,” said Lee. “As the Texas Stock Exchange becomes operational next year, I’m confident even more opportunities will open up for McCombs graduates to thrive.”
Lee has 30 years of experience in U.S. equity markets, alternative investments and governance of large public retirement systems and endowments. He founded the Texas Stock Exchange in 2023 and serves as the chairman and CEO of TXSE Group Inc. Previously, Lee co-founded trading technology companies that developed early smart order routing technologies to connect investors and U.S. equity venues as well as an electronic trading firm that regularly transacted large percentages of U.S. equity volume.
He serves as the president of the Houston Symphony Endowment. He was also chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Teacher Retirement System of Texas and commissioner on the Texas Parks & Wildlife Commission, Texas Sunset Commission, Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Texas Finance Commission, and Texas Growth Fund.

Honorees are people who have made outstanding professional contributions to the business community and who have advanced humanity through their exemplary civic, philanthropic, and educational activities. A selection committee considers each year’s Hall of Fame nominees for induction.
The Rising Star Award recognizes young alumni who are making their mark in their respective fields. Established in 2004, this award is presented to young alumni who have experienced professional success and have shown exemplary service to the McCombs Alumni Network. Recipients are graduates who exemplify professionalism and dedication in the business world. Each year, the McCombs BBA and MBA Advisory Boards, along with Dean Mills, select the Rising Star awardees.

Dean Lillian Mills chats with Jon and Becky Brumley at this year’s Homecoming Tailgate barbecue.
McCombs welcomed more than 600 alumni to its 2024 Homecoming Weekend September 27 through 28, with a Saturday tailgate kicking off UT’s first Southeastern Conference game against Mississippi.
The weekend consisted of a business conference led by Dean Lillian Mills and featuring notables like Sandy Leeds, professor of instruction with the Department of Finance at McCombs; Jon Brumley, Founder, President and CEO of Bounty Minerals, LP; Rex Du, professor with the Department of Marketing at McCombs; and a keynote interview with Dean Mills and Blake Poutra, managing partner at Big Enrichment.
A reception followed the conference, highlighting class reunions for 1979, 1984, 1989, 1994, 1999, 2004, 2009, 2014, and 2019 cohorts.
The following day, a large crowd gathered at the Tejas Room and Patio in the AT&T Hotel and Conference Room for barbecue, drinks, and family friendly activities during the annual football tailgate. This year’s excitement was palpable ahead of the first SEC conference game, which the Longhorns handily won against Mississippi.
“This event is always a fantastic time, but this year, you can just feel an electricity in the air,” said Christine Burdell, Director of Alumni Relations. “We love to see our alumni come together to reconnect and cheer on their alma mater.”
After the tailgate, those who were able to secure a seat in the Homecoming football block attended the game as a group and saw the win first-hand.
“It’s a great time to be a Longhorn,” said one alumnus.
Plans for next year’s homecoming events are already underway, and a date will be announced soon. In the meantime, we invite you to view the photos of this year’s exciting event here.
This summer McCombs Alumni Chapters across the country held Summer Celebrations, special gatherings where they welcomed fellow alumni as well as student interns in the area. In the Bay Area, McCombs partnered with the Cockrell School of Engineering to bring a panel that discussed the impact of AI on future careers, while in Los Angeles McCombs joined forces with Moody College of Communication to offer a networking event for alumni. In New York City, alumni and students enjoyed a brunch while the Dallas Alumni Chapter welcomed Dean Mills to mingle with their group.
All events were well-attended, and alumni said they enjoyed getting a chance to meet the next crop of Longhorns. While our Summer Celebrations have wrapped for this year, we still have plenty to keep you busy during the fall months. In the meantime, we hope you’ll enjoy perusing the photos of this year’s celebrations.
Houston native Bobby Burton was pursuing his accounting degree at McCombs. Then a chance comment by his professor helped him realize how to marry his passion for sports and numbers. Now, as the Longhorns head into their first SEC season, he shares how he got to be the host of the number one Longhorn sports podcast and his predictions for this historic football season.
Q: Where are you originally from?
A: Houston.
Q: What brought you to UT Austin?
A: For 4th of July and Labor Day, my parents would take us water skiing and camping on Lake Travis when I was young. I’ve always loved UT and Austin.
Q: Tell us what an impact being a McCombs grad has had on your life?
A: The exposure to so many smart people at Texas, the exposure to different ideas and to people who had the ability to execute those ideas, was an eye opener for me. The UT business school and that exposure gave me the confidence that I could do the things I wanted to with my life and my career.
Q: Share a lasting memory of your time at McCombs.
A: I was an accounting major but I knew I wanted to work in sports when I graduated. So I had begun looking for a way to tie the academics at Texas into my love for sports. I had a great professor, Michael Granoff. One day in class, he talked about the NCAA, college sports’ governing body, only for 30 seconds or so. The next week, I went to his office hours. I shared a book I had read called The Hundred Yard Lie. He borrowed the book from me and ended up reading it himself. The next time I went to his office hours, he had a number of thoughts about the book, about the broad financial impact of college sports in the university setting, and more. He didn’t have to do that, but he did, and I’ll always be grateful to him. In his own way, he showed me that you can marry what you’re studying with what you really want to do with your life.
Q: Tell us how you continue to be involved with McCombs, and why is that important to you?
A: I try to support UT in many ways. Whether that’s by hiring young people from UT or promoting UT more generally. I think it’s important to remember the people and places that shaped you and to give back.
Q: We have just welcomed new students to our campus. Do you have any advice you’d like to share with them as the embark on their college careers?
A: You’ve made it into Texas for a reason. Life is there for the taking. So don’t just go through the motions. Apply yourself in a way that is meaningful to you. It may even take you a while to figure out what that is. But keep searching and when you find it, go for it with everything you’ve got.
Q: What is the greatest thing you’ve accomplished with your career and what do you want to do next?
A: Very early in my career, I played a central role in creating Rivals.com. College sports and recruiting websites, like Rivals and 247Sports, didn’t exist when I was growing up. We created both of those companies. I’m currently doing exactly what I want to do next. I’m going back to my roots. I’m producing On Texas Football. It’s the No. 1 podcast and YouTube channel covering the Texas Longhorns sports programs and recruiting.
Q: What are your predictions for the Longhorn’s first season in the SEC?
A: I’ll go with a 10-2 regular season. And if they can do that, the Longhorns will be in the college football playoffs for the second straight year. Hook ’em!

Q: Where are you originally from?
A: Houston, TX
Q: What brought you to UT Austin?
A: I was most interested in being a part of McCombs. I’ve always had a passion for business, markets, and utilizing my creative spirit to deliver something amazing for the world. UT Austin seemed like a perfect place to nurture those interests.
Q:Tell us what an impact being a McCombs grad has had on your life?
A: McCombs provided me with an excellent platform to launch my career. The reputation alone has gotten me a foot in the door multiple times. The school continues to do amazing things for academic community and the greater world and I feel extremely proud to be a part of that legacy. It’s a wonderful feeling to be viewed so positively in the corporate world by peers and leaders.
Q: Share a lasting memory of your time at McCombs.
A: My favorite memory of McCombs was interview season put on by the career services organization. The corporations were so vested in McCombs students and it was extremely heartwarming to see that. The coaching provided was so beneficial and tips I received from the department were extremely formative, so much so that I have continued to share them with other colleagues I mentor. It was also an amazing opportunity to learn how to story-tell my experiences in an impactful way.
Q: Tell us how you continue to be involved with McCombs, and why is that important to you?
A: I have recently taken up the position as president of the Women of McCombs Alumni gorup here in Austin. We have a series of events planned for this year to help alumni connect with each other in meaningful ways. I am also working with the Supply Chain Center of Excellence to help support the undergraduate program. Providing them with case studies, opportunities to participate in real-life projects and sharing new insights and thought leadership in supply chain are all part of the plan.
Q: We’re getting ready to welcome new students to our campus. Do you have any advice you’d like to share with them as they embark on their college careers?
A:
Study abroad! Expand your horizon and find beauty in the ways we are all different, yet absolutely the same.
Find a Mentor. You don’t know what you don’t know. Someone who is where you want to be would be an ideal person to be your mentor. Let them guide you and help you avoid making mistakes.
Join several clubs based on your interests. It’s important to figure out what you want and who you are. Once you have these nailed, life become super easy. Finding those with like-minded interests helps the journey become pleasant and fun.
Q: What are you doing now with your career?
A: I started my own supply chain consulting company, Sustainable Inc., about six years ago. I’ve had the amazing privilege of working with several Fortune 100 and 500 clients in helping them drive savings in their sourcing and procurement operations, elevate their logistics and transportation strategies and reduce their supply chain complexity through various projects utilizing six sigma methodologies. My firm is growing, and I am looking to hire other Longhorns!
Q: Share your life and career ambitions and how McCombs has prepared you to achieve them.
A: My first job out of college was through McCombs. I started my career with Textron as a part of their Supply Chain Leadership program. I could not have had a more perfectly orchestrated beginning to my career journey. The program provided me with the opportunity to work on several special projects with high visibility to leadership and also to interact with several supply chain groups simultaneously. That is all thanks to McCombs! It is this opportunity that positioned me for the other amazing career pivots I have had throughout the years.
My goals now are to grow my firm and to create a circle of supply chain experts to guide thought leadership for the field in the coming decades.

We will be cheering for Kaitlin and the USA Women’s Rowing Team as they work to bring home yet another medal!
