2024 Summer Celebrations Announced

The McCombs Alumni Chapter Summer Celebrations are an annual tradition where local alumni welcome student interns and new graduates to their city. School representatives will attend each event, and Dean Mills will also be in a few cities. We have confirmed event dates in the following cities, and more are coming soon. 2024 grads and students enjoy free admission. All other alumni admission is $10, which generally includes your first drink and appetizers.

How former Slack and Twitter Executive April Underwood, BBA ’01, created a career in venture capital

April Underwood began investing while at X, then called Twitter, where she was the company’s director of product. She received a windfall from the social-media company’s November 2013 initial public offering and was eager to use this money toward making angel investments. photoDoug Prechter has over 10 years of corporate finance and operations experience in the energy sector, including RNG, oilfield services, and investment banking. Prior to joining Vision RNG, Doug was the Vice President of Finance & Strategy for Monarch Bioenergy, an ag-based RNG producer, and previously was a member of Evercore’s energy investment banking team where he executed over $9.0 billion in M&A, private capital, and restructuring transactions. Before Evercore, he served in various operations management roles with SLB. Doug graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and received his M.B.A. from the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas. READ MORE

Applied Digital Appoints Ella Benson, BBA, to Board of Directors

photoElla Benson brings over a decade of experience in financial services and is a Director at Oasis Management Co., Ltd. (“Oasis”). She has substantial experience working with public companies undergoing strategic transitions. Prior to joining Oasis in 2013, Benson was an analyst at GAM, an independent asset management firm, from 2009 to 2013. Benson holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance from the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin. READ MORE

Cory Nguyen, MBA ’18, conducts vaccine research as a freshman and finds success in Houston

photoUTSA encourages students of all levels to pursue transformative learning experiences outside of the classroom with opportunities such as research, volunteering and mentorship, and study away programs. UTSA Top Scholar Cory Nguyen ’18 took advantage of all three. He conducted vaccine research as a freshman, traveled to South Korea as a senior and was both a mentor and mentee in between.

After completing his bachelor’s degree at UTSA, Nguyen attended the McCombs School of Business at UT Austin and earned a master’s degree in business analytics. From there, he landed a job at Chevron as a data scientist in Houston, where he has worked since 2019. READ MORE

Robert Thaxton’s career with U.S. Energy began in 2014 as a member of the firm’s engineering department. In 2020, Robert was promoted to senior strategist, where he facilitated the company’s strategic positioning, evaluation of new business strategies, and the development of risk management initiatives designed to protect the organization’s core interests.

Thaxton earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering from Marietta College and an MBA from the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin. He also holds a certificate in conflict resolution from Cornell University. READ MORE

Supervisory Board Extends CEO Rob Smith’s, MBA, Contract

Before joining KION, Rob Smith was President & CEO of the publicly listed Finnish group Konecranes, a leading international manufacturer of industrial cranes and container port automation. From 2013 to 2019, he was Senior Vice President & General Manager Europe, Africa and Middle East of the global agricultural machinery company AGCO Corporation. Prior to that, he held management positions in automotive supply and capital goods companies in the U.S., France and Germany. Smith holds a BSE in Systems Engineering from Princeton University, an MBA in International Operations & Finance from the University of Texas at Austin – Red McCombs School of Business. He earned his Diplom-Kaufmann and Dr. rer. pol. degrees from the WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management in Koblenz, Germany and wrote his dissertation on Global Supply Chain Performance and Risk Optimisation. Sow Good Appoints Brendon Fischer, MBA, as Interim Chief Financial Officer

photoBrendon Fischer has been appointed as the interim Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Sow Good Inc., effective April 2, 2024, following the resignation of the former CFO, Keith Terreri. Fischer brings over 20 years of financial leadership experience, including roles at Fischer Capital Management and Rocky Mountain Advisors. He holds an MBA from the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin and is a CFA charter holder.
