Know Your Worth: a Step-by-Step Negotiation Workshop

In this 90-minute interactive workshop, author, speaker and career consultant Emilie will equip you with a step-by-step process for negotiating your next job offer. Join us to learn:

• why negotiation is especially hard for women and people of color: the role unconscious bias still plays in the workplace.

• how to calculate your market value using data as well as networking.

• how to identify your strengths and communicate them using strategic framing that highlights your value.

• how to frame your ask(s) and prioritize them with a focused, tiered strategy.

• and how to navigate common pitfalls and recover a conversation gone awry.

 

Finding the Hidden Job Market

Does applying to jobs feel like sending resumes and cover letters into the void? In this workshop, graduate students will learn the advantage of accessing the hidden job market, how it differs from the open job market, and how to develop communication skills necessary to tap into the hidden job market. Students will consider their professional identity and strengths and how to communicate them to employers, activate their network and intentionally grow it within their target job families by drafting outreach messages, and learn how to get inside information about job opportunities and organizations to distinguish their application.

 

Evaluating Offer Letters as an International Graduate Student 

Wednesday, May 26, 12-1pm

During this one-hour workshop participants will be introduced to what international candidates need to consider when evaluating offer letters and how to approach that conversation with the hiring manager. This session will provide a casual, low stakes environment, with fellow international graduate students, to ask more specific questions about evaluating offers and navigating topics such as immigration, visa, and sponsorship.

 

 

The College to Career Speaker Series Presents: The Art of Side Hustling: Entrepreneurship & Career Management

Why: Hear from a diverse group of entrepreneurs and self-starters who have managed successful careers in niche industries. Panelists will share an in-depth perspective on strategic career management, starting and growing independent business ventures, and how social media can be a tool to maximize reach and influence surrounding communities. The event will be moderated by a student entrepreneur from the LaunchPad at UT Austin. This virtual event is for all UT Austin students and alumni from undergraduate and advanced degree programs. Panelists come from a diverse set of backgrounds and degree levels from business, communication, education, and psychology!

Landing a Higher Ed Job in Today’s Climate for Graduate Students

Learn from recent graduate student alumni about how they landed a job in higher education as faculty, lecturers, researchers, and administrators in our current landscape. Panelists will demystify the current academic hiring landscape and offer clarity on “hiring freezes” as well as their approaches to getting the job, onboarding, and relocating. Students learn how to see the hiring process from the committee’s perspective and speak to institutional priorities, such as the importance of diversity, in their job documents and during the interview process.

 

Alumni@Work: TX ‘21 and Beyond Edition! 

Meet with advanced degree alumni who graduated and started new jobs during the Covid-19 pandemic and learn about their experiences applying, interviewing, and onboarding in a remote world.  Meet individually or in small groups with advanced degree alumni who are working in industry, government, nonprofit, business and academia.
