Class Note: Mark Shen, MBA ’16

St. Louis-based BJC HealthCare named Mark W. Shen, MD, president of St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Dr. Shen most recently served as CEO of St. Louis-based Ascension’s Texas Accountable Care Network and senior vice president of network development at Ascension Texas. He has experience serving as president of Dell Children’s Medical Center/Dell Children’s Health in Austin. He holds an MBA from the McCombs School of Business-The University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Shen succeeds Joan Magruder, who was promoted to a group president role at BJC HealthCare in 2016. The group president role is expanding, and Ms. Magruder is transitioning out of the St. Louis Children’s Hospital president position.

Class Note: Yun Guo, MSBA ’17

Yun Guo graduated from the University of Texas McCombs School of Business with a master’s in business analytics in 2017. Originally from China, he is currently working for IBM in the US as a senior consultant. In the article, Yun Guo talks about his school experience. Read more here. 

Class Note: Andreas G. Frank, MBA ’01

Hill-Rom announced that Andreas G. Frank, currently senior vice president, Corporate Development and Strategy, and chief transformation officer, has been appointed senior vice president and president of the company’s Front Line Care business, which includes Welch Allyn, Vision Care and Respiratory Care. Mr. Frank replaces Alton Shader, whose departure was previously announced. Read more here. 

Class Note: Alejandra Rodriguez Boughton, MBA ’14

In 2014, Alejandra Rodriguez Boughton was living in Austin and homesick for her native Monterrey, Mexico. After earning her MBA from the University of Texas McCombs School of Business, she was lost. She didn’t want to return to her career in corporate banking, but she didn’t know what she wanted to do. Stressed, she started cooking in the kitchen of her South Austin apartment. “I wanted to do this mole that you find specifically in the markets of Oaxaca,” she says. But she needed the peppers of her childhood—specifically, chilhuacle pepper, which is “pretty much impossible to find outside of Oaxaca,” she says. She spent hours online searching for seed and started growing peppers in containers on her balcony. “One day it hit me in the shower: Maybe I could make a business out of this,” she says. Class Note: Lance Loeffler, BBA ’99, MBA ’04

Halliburton Co. has promoted Lance Loeffler to chief financial officer, the oil-field services company said Monday. Mr. Loeffler, who joined Halliburton in 2014 as vice president of corporate development overseeing mergers and acquisitions, would be Halliburton’s third CFO in less than two years. He replaces Christopher Weber, who joined Halliburton in June 2017 from Parker Drilling Co. and is leaving to pursue other opportunities, Halliburton said. Read more here. 

Class Note: George Steven McElroy, BBA ’81

Steve McElroy, BBA ’81, knows how to bet on himself. One day in 1988, he sent a letter to business magnate and former presidential candidate Ross Perot about an invention he came up with. Miraculously, Perot loved the idea, and the two went into business together. Years later, at 37, McElroy—who at the time had never picked up a paintbrush—left the business world to pursue painting. Since then, he’s sold more than 3,700 works of art. Read more here. 

Class Note: Harrison Perl, MPA ’17

Harrison is a serial entrepreneur who has built three companies prior to starting work on C4Coin. He holds a Masters’ in Professional Accounting from the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin. His combination of startup experience and general business and financial training makes him an ideal leader for the C4Coin project. Read more here.

Class Note: Tamara Fields, BBA ’96

Accenture has appointed Tamara Fields as office managing director for Austin effective immediately. In this role, Fields will be responsible for expanding Accenture’s business in Austin, focusing on bringing innovation to clients, attracting top talent and strengthening the company’s impact in the Austin community.
Fields has more than 20 years of experience in the health and public service sector, serving federal and state government clients. She will continue to work with the State of Texas clients to deliver public services and support agency operations and modernization efforts. A native of Austin, she is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin McCombs School of Business.

“Tamara is a strong business leader with a passion for our people and an unwavering commitment to providing an inclusive work environment for people of all backgrounds,” said Peggy Kostial, Southwest regional managing director, Accenture. “Austin is an important market for our region and company, and we’re looking forward to Tamara’s leadership as we continue to grow our presence and leadership in the Austin.”

“I’m passionate about working with our clients to improve Texans’ lives and creating a workplace where our Austin team can be their best both professionally and personally,” said Fields. “It’s an honor to take on this role in my hometown of Austin, and I’m eager to continue to strengthen a sense of community.”

Class Note: Mark Chassay, BBA ’88

Faculty, medical students, friends, and family members gathered together Oct. 19 to celebrate the career and accomplishments of Mark Chassay, M.D., ’92, who accepted his Distinguished Alumnus Award during a special event at Third Coast.

Chassay, an assistant professor of orthopedic surgery and family and community medicine, also serves as associate dean for Alumni Relations and Continuing Medical Education and assistant dean for Admissions and Student Affairs. He thanked the selection committee for the award and also congratulated Frank J. Domino, M.D., ’88, who accepted his Distinguished Alumnus Award the following evening during the Alumni Reunion.

“I’m humbled to be recognized as a distinguished alumnus,” Chassay said. “It means a lot to me to be honored by my school, which has given me such a solid foundation and enabled me to accomplish so many things in life. For that I am eternally grateful.” Read more

Class Note: Ryan Stash, BBA ’00, MPA ’00, MBA ’07

Regions Bank announced that Ryan Stash has joined the Energy & Natural Resources group as a Managing Director with an emphasis on covering corporate clients and prospects across the entire energy platform to support Regions’ capital markets expansion. Stash will be based in Houston, Texas, and will report to Brian Tate, Executive Managing Director of Regions Securities LLC, and group head of Energy & Natural Resources.  Following Stash’s hiring, Regions Bank, a subsidiary of Alabama-based Regions Financial Corp. (NYSE: RF), has expanded its energy and natural resources platform.

Stash brings more than 16 years of investment banking, capital markets, and consulting experience. Stash has originated, structured, and executed numerous complex, event-driven financings and provided advisory services for upstream and midstream clients. Over his career at Wells Fargo Securities, Stash has a demonstrated history of developing relationships and originating lead roles that significantly impact a broader capital markets and advisory platform.
