10. Discover Austin’s Vibrant Film Scene

Discover Austin’s vibrant film scene at The Paramount Theatre or Austin Film Society. Movie-buffs and letterbox fanatics can enjoy new movie screenings, Q&A sessions with filmmakers, and classic film series in the summer and throughout the year.

Paramount Theatre’s annual Summer Classic Film Series screened over 85 films last summer, like Goodfellas, Bonnie and Clyde, My Cousin Vinny, and more! Film rosters are released at the top of every month, beginning in May. Don’t miss out on the ultimate summer film experience in Austin.

9. Talk All things Television

Get sneak peeks of new TV shows, attend Q&A sessions with your favorite actors and writers, and participate in interactive events that showcase the latest trends in TV at the Austin Television Festival. The agenda includes the premiere of season three of the HBO comedy show, The Righteous Gemstones, an appearance by Seth Meyers, and a conversation with the showrunner and cast of Grown-ish.

8. Hang out at Tweedy’s Bar

Newly opened on North University, Tweedy’s Bar has replaced the old campus staple, Spider House Café. The new spot has taken its name from a former employee of Spider House and has chosen to honor the original design and ambiance of the previous bar. In addition to drinks, customers can purchase baked goods from Zucchini Kill and sandwiches and burgers from Golden Tiger. Open daily from 12 PM – 2 AM, visit Tweedy’s Bar for cozy summer evenings.

7. Grab Goodies at the Mueller Texas Farmers’ Market

Featuring over 120 vendors with agricultural producers within a 150-mile radius, the Mueller Texas Farmers’ Market has been hailed as Austin Chronicle‘s Best of Austin Farmers’ Market for 9 years in a row. Open every Sunday between 10 AM – 2 PM, whether it is sunny or rainy, you can incorporate the farmers market into your summer routine.

6. Take a stroll at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center

With over 900 native Texas plant species, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is the perfect peaceful outdoor activity. Located in South Austin, the center is open daily from 9 AM – 5 PM, with free admission for all UT students, faculty, and staff (with ID). During your visit, be sure to stop by the Wildflower Café, Observation Tower, and Wetland Pond.

5. Shop at The Domain

In the mood for shopping? Spend the day at The Domain in North Austin, an outdoor shopping mall with over 100 restaurants, bars, retail, and luxury stores to choose from. In the mood for food and an immersive mini-golf course? Check out The Dirdie Birdie.

Open 10 AM – 8 PM Monday through Thursday, 10 AM – 9 PM. Friday and Saturday, and 12 PM – 6 PM. on Sunday, make The Domain a repeated destination this summer.

4. Explore South Congress

Featuring both local vendors and mainstream stores, South Congress is the perfect blend of Austin’s local culture and city life. With stores scattered along either side of SoCo, the walkable destination features Reformation, Lululemon, and Madewell, alongside local favorites SoCo Makers Market with Vintage, Maya Star, and Allens Boots. The street also includes popular coffee shops and restaurants, including Home Slice Pizza, Amy’s Ice Creams, and Bennu Coffee. 3. Wander into one of Downtown Austin’s Speakeasies

Austin’s best not-so-kept secret is the hidden bars and speakeasies! Located in unconventional spaces like a parking garage, firehouse, and behind what looks like a run-down floppy disk repair company, Austin speakeasies are perfect for those who want to explore the low-key city bar scene.

2. Sit back and Relax at the Blue Starlite Mini Urban Drive-in Rooftop

Boasting a 360-degree rooftop view of Downtown Austin, the Blue Starlite Mini Urban-Drive-in has been “keeping Austin funky and making memories under the stars” since 2009. Blue Starlite provides viewers with a multi-screen experience in both its Mueller and Downtown locations, making the drive-in a great evening venture with friends or a special someone. Catch a public screening Friday through Sunday, or schedule a private event on any day of the week.

1. Cool Off in One of Austin’s Swimming Holes

From the famous Barton Springs Pool to Blue Hole, Austin has its fair share of swimming holes and paddleboarding spots within the city and on its outskirts. Open 5 – 8 AM (Swim at Your Own Risk) and 8 AM – 10 PM (Guarded Swim) Monday through Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday, Barton Springs Pool in Downtown Austin is convenient for those looking for a small commute.

If you don’t mind the additional travel time, visit Blue Hole Regional Park, Barton Creek Greenbelt, Jacob’s Well Natural Area, Krause Springs, and Hamilton Pool Reserve for the complete, all-natural experience. Be sure to check each swimming hole’s website for updated information on hours, events, fees, and more before scheduling your visit.

Admissions Announcement: Texas McCombs Full-Time MBA Adds Round 4 for Fall 2023 Entry

The Round 3 application deadline to the Texas McCombs Full-Time MBA program is slated for March 28, 2023. However, economic uncertainty has impacted many prospective students around the world. With many prospective students facing layoffs or uncertainty in their professional situation, our team believes an additional application round will be helpful for those needing a little more time to work on their application and evaluate their next professional step.

In response, Texas McCombs will add a fourth round to the Full-Time MBA Class of 2025. The Round 4 application deadline is Thursday, May 11, 2023.

Stacey Batas, Director of Full-Time MBA Recruiting and Admissions, provides insight on the addition of a new application round and advice for navigating the application.

Who is eligible to apply in Round 4?

Any U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident of the U.S. is eligible to apply in the new round. Round 4 is not open to international applicants due to issues with visa documentation timelines.

Are you still offering application fee waivers or test waivers to Round 4 applicants?

Yes! We have one more application fee waiver-eligible event, open to both Round 3 and Round 4 applicants in this application cycle. In order to obtain the waiver, you must register for and attend our Application Overview Virtual Session on March 7 at 8AM CT. Register here.

As with other rounds, test waiver petitions are also available and can be found on our website. If you are considering applying in Round 4 and would like to submit your application without a GMAT, GRE or Executive Assessment exam, please read this document carefully to see if you’re eligible and submit the waiver form by no later than May 4, or 7 days before the deadline.

Are there still financial aid or scholarship opportunities available to Round 4 applicants?

It’s hard for the admissions team to predict merit-based scholarship availability for future rounds, since it depends on how many scholarships we have to award at that point in the cycle. Admitted students will be notified within their acceptance letter if they receive any merit-based scholarship funding from McCombs.

How will Round 4 work? When will decisions be released?

Round 4 will work much like our other rounds – you need to submit your application by 11:59 PM CT on May 11, 2023.Decisions will be released on or before June 8, and the enrollment deposit deadline for those admitted will be June 15.

I was laid off. How do I explain being laid off in my application?

Though unfortunate and stressful, lay-offs happen! Once you upload your resume on the “Employment Information” section of the application, there will be a question asking whether or not you’re currently employed full-time. If the answer is no, you’ll be given a chance to explain your situation. This response is limited to 255 characters, so you don’t have to go into full detail here! If you’d like to include additional details about your employment to the admissions committee, complete the optional statement for us to review.

I was laid off and I don’t have a professional recommender. What are my other options?

There are lots of great sources for recommendation letters! Here are some of our tips to help you choose a recommender who knows you well and can speak to your strengths.

What are the benefits of applying in Round 4 vs. applying next cycle?

The biggest benefit is that you potentially won’t need to wait a full year to enroll! Round 4 is a great option for those who definitely know they want to go to McCombs, but who may have figured that out a little later in the game. We’d also like to dispel the myth that having to reapply the following cycle is a bad thing. We value re-applicants and never look down on someone who applied late cycle and then re-applied the following fall.

What advice would you give to an applicant submitting in Round 4?

Get to know us! We’re hosting campus visits until late April and will be hosting virtual events to help you navigate the application process. Attending our events can also help you craft your essay and prepare for the video assessment.

Full-Time MBA Class of 2022 Achieves Employment Heights, Beats School Record in Average Base Salary

(December 1, 2022) – Austin, Texas – After navigating the past couple of years of disruption and uncertainty from the pandemic, the Texas McCombs Full-Time MBA Class of 2022 achieved strong outcomes, securing an average base salary of $144,564, the highest in school history.

Brittany Tyree, managing director of career education and coaching, attributes these successes to the robust job market and students’ preparedness and engagement with McCombs Career Management and Corporate Relations (CMCR) resources.

The Texas McCombs career management team’s approach to helping students prepare for their job search includes a strategic career planning course, coaching appointments with school career consultants and industry experts, and career workshops, among other events and experiential learning opportunities.

The strategic career planning course, delivered in year one of the MBA experience, aids students in building a strong career foundation. The course progresses students through the Career Management Framework, helping MBAs evaluate their priorities, assess the job market, develop a personalized plan, and ultimately launch into their overarching career strategy.

Of the 241 students who matriculated in the Texas McCombs Class of 2022, 95 percent received a full-time offer within 3 months post-graduation and 93 percent reported accepting the employment offer, the latter consistent with the previous graduating class.

As previously mentioned, the recent graduating class saw an impressive increase in average base salary to $144,564, up 11 percent from 2021. The class also experienced a 10 percent jump in signing bonuses, averaging $31,178.

Consulting, financial services, and technology industries continue to attract Texas McCombs graduates, in fact, interest and job acceptances in these professional industries grew 10 percent since 2019. Although technology was the top hiring industry (32 percent) among the graduating class, consulting achieved the highest increase in job acceptances (30 percent), a 7 percent increase from the previous year. The financial services (18 percent) and real estate (5 percent) industries followed.

Similar to the previous year, Texas McCombs MBAs continue to remain interested in the consulting function, especially as the market demand for professional services increased. Given the CMCR team’s emphasis on educating students about various career path options, students were also well positioned to secure impactful roles throughout technology. More specifically, 32 percent accepted employment in technology, securing roles in marketing, sales, operations, finance, and general management. Worth noting, 74 percent of the Class of 2022’s offers were obtained through school-facilitated career resources.

Overall, there are several players to recognize, who helped prepare our graduating class with the right tools and experiences, allowing them to quickly distinguish themselves. Coming In for National Coming Out Day

In honor of National Coming Out Day, Texas McCombs is excited to celebrate the students who are “coming in” to their identities and the community shared amongst our Engaged Queer and Ally (eQual) MBAs.

Coming out is a significant moment in a queer person’s life but it’s important to note that the process of coming out is not finite. As an LGBTQ+ individual enters new spaces, they constantly make choices about sharing their identity with the people around them.

Most students in the McCombs MBA program are coming back to school after spending years in the workforce. It’s an ongoing activity to share aspects of yourself with new classmates, study team members, or during the process of recruiting for full-time positions of internships. eQual is focused on creating welcoming spaces and supporting our students as they navigate these experiences!

This year the organization is celebrating National Coming Out Day with two days of programming including a Storytelling Hour hosted by the Consortium for Graduate Study in Management (CGSM) where current LGBTQ+ students and faculty will share stories of journey and discovery, as well as a community event with local alumni and the Graduate Business Council (GBC).

Exploring Scholarships and
Loan Options

We understand that pursuing your MBA at a top school is a big investment in your future. As you explore ways to further your education and accelerate your career trajectory, we invite you to think about defining your own return on investment (ROI). Are you looking for a promotion or salary increase? Or are you searching for a new challenge or a way to align your personal and professional aspirations? It may be all of the above, so define your ROI as you consider an MBA for your academic and professional future.

To make your MBA future more attainable, Texas McCombs provides financial assistance to many students to help cover the cost of education. The most common financial assistance comes in the form of student loans, but other options may help fund your MBA. We invite you to review the options below to help facilitate your personal ROI for your MBA.

Recruiting Scholarships

Texas McCombs offers merit-based recruiting scholarships funded through the generous support of individual donors and corporate supporters. All applicants are automatically considered for recruiting scholarships during the admissions review process. Recruiting scholarships are offered to domestic and international candidates who demonstrate a superior record of academic merit and professional accomplishments.

Texas McCombs designates the first-round application deadline as the priority deadline for scholarships and fellowships.

The MBA Program’s scholarship funding varies from year to year, thus the percentage of students who receive scholarships will also vary from year to year. This past admissions cycle, 75% of Admitted Full-Time MBA students received scholarship offers. Scholarships range from $2,000 to full-tuition awards.

For International candidates, 75% of enrolled students received scholarship offers.

In tandem with our recruiting scholarships, McCombs partners with Bay Area for McCombs, Consortium for Graduate Study in Management, Teach for America, Forté Foundation, and Reaching Out MBA to allocate selective scholarship and Fellowship designations to top admitted candidates.

2nd Year Student Scholarships

At the end of the first year, Full-Time MBA students are invited to apply for a continuing student scholarship for their second year. These awards typically range anywhere from $1,000-$5,000. The 2nd Year Full-Time MBA Scholarship awards are given based on academic performance, leadership, and involvement during their first year in the program, as well as financial need.

Institutional Scholarships

The UT Austin Office of Financial Aid administers institutional endowed scholarships for continuing students that first-year MBAs may qualify for, beginning in November of their first year. First-year MBA students may be eligible to apply, but please review the specific criteria and application procedures carefully and reach out to McCombs Financial Aid with any questions.

Federal Loans

Many students are eligible for federal student loans and in some cases, grants. To determine your eligibility you must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA for the 2022-2023 school year will be available on October 1, and Texas has a priority deadline of January 15. At the latest, it is recommended that you have your FAFSA completed by June 1. Students who are eligible to complete the FAFSA are U.S. Citizens, Permanent Residents, and other eligible non-citizens. Private Education Loans

Private/alternative loans are not offered by federal or state governments. As a result, the terms of the loan will vary from lender to lender. If pursuing a private loan, check with your lender about the length of time your application will remain valid to ensure your approval won’t expire before you actually start the program.

The Texas McCombs MBA Financial Aid team cannot recommend any private loans but will work with all banks and lending institutions once you’ve been approved.

Loans for International Students

For international students, there may be private loan options, with or without a U.S. citizen or permanent resident co-signer. (Note: We, as The University of Texas at Austin, cannot be your co-signer, nor can we recommend any specific lenders.) The student-run International MBA Student Association (IMBASA) is a good resource for information about pursuing an MBA as an international student. You are encouraged to reach out to IMBASA with any questions.

Most students finance their MBA education using multiple sources— a combination of personal savings and loans and, in some cases, scholarship funding. Before you apply to business school, do research on how to finance your education, please reach out to the MBA Admissions Team with any questions.

How to Reapply for Your MBA

With each new admissions cycle, questions come in from those who have applied in the past about applying again to join the next class of Texas McCombs MBAs.

First, having applied in a previous year is not considered a negative factor in your application.

We are pleased to see your continued interest in the program and will evaluate your new application on its merits and in the context of the new applicant pool, just as if you are applying for the first time. Below is an overview of important info and tips for reapplying to the MBA program that we hope you find helpful.

Application

All candidates reapplying are required to complete a new application new essay, a new resume, and pay the application fee. Our essay prompts can change from year to year, so copying and pasting your essay responses from a previous application cycle is not recommended. In addition, rewriting your essays shows effort!

Official Transcripts

We keep your official transcript on file for one year. You will need to submit your transcripts again if you have taken any additional coursework or if you applied more than one year ago. You can always review your application status on the “MyStatus” page to make sure you have current transcripts.

Test Scores

GMAT  and GRE  scores are also kept on file for one year and overall, scores are valid five years after the date the test is taken. This year candidates also have the option of submitting an Executive Assessment (EA) test score or a merit-based test waiver. For TOEFL scores, this period is two years. The McCombs Admissions Committee considers only the highest total submitted score in the evaluation of applications.

Recommendation Letter 

Although not required, we suggest you submit a new letter of recommendation. Determine if another recommender may provide a more current, insightful, and thorough perspective on your experience. If you choose to submit a prior recommendation, you will need to email MBA Admissions with a request to resubmit.

How Have You Improved?

While completing your application, you will be asked, “Since your previous application, what steps have you taken to enhance your candidacy?” The Admissions Committee reviews this answer closely so please ensure that you spend time reflecting on and explaining these improvements.

Choosing to reapply to the MBA program shows perseverance and dedication. We encourage you to consider giving yourself a fresh start when you approach your new application. Think through and reassess your application, address any weak areas, and add new information that may be helpful in the admission process.

The Texas McCombs Admissions Connection

The Texas McCombs Admissions Connection is designed to add a human component to the application process and is the perfect way to wrap up your Texas McCombs MBA application journey.

What is an Admissions Connection?

The Admissions Connection is a live, virtual get-to-know-you session that serves as an opportunity for our applicants to engage directly with a Full-Time MBA Admissions Ambassador. While not required, registering for and attending an Admissions Connection session is highly encouraged.

These sessions are NOT your traditional admissions interview. MBA applicants will have 15 minutes with a student member of the McCombs Ambassador Committee (MAC) to ask questions about the program/student experience, discuss information about their candidacy that is not addressed elsewhere, and align on the next steps in the application process.

Admissions Connections will become available roughly one-week post-round deadline. Once available, applicants will be able to choose a host based on shared interests whenever they register for a slot.

How should I prepare for the Admissions Connection?

The Admissions Connection session is virtual, on Zoom, and will kick off with a very brief mutual introduction between the applicant and the Admissions Ambassador. You will know who your host is ahead of time and will be provided with their LinkedIn page.

Tip: Keep your introduction to 1-3 minutes only. Remember the ambassador will not have access to your resume; we recommend mixing a bit of personal and professional in your introduction.

After the introduction, the applicant will drive the conversation with the Admissions Ambassador.

Tip: Because the session will last approximately 15 minutes, we recommend applicants come prepared with 3–5 questions about the MBA program and/or next steps in the application process.

Here is a list of topics to consider during the Admissions Connection:

Discuss any aspect of your candidacy that has not already been covered in other application components.
Get to know your host and their experience at Texas McCombs. Ask them questions about their MBA journey and the McCombs community.
Ask for tips and advice on how to best navigate and spend the time between the admission decision and program kick-off.

The Admissions Ambassador will wrap up the session by asking you for feedback on your Full-Time MBA admissions experience and covering key dates to remember as you conclude the application process.

Does the Admissions Connection impact the admission decision?

There is no evaluative component to this session, although your Admissions Ambassador will be able to pass along any information you share to the admissions committee.

Tip: Remember that every interaction you have with a member of the Texas McCombs community is an opportunity to make a positive impression about who you are and your MBA candidacy. From speaking to our receptionist at the MBA Program Office, to meeting an Admissions Officer on the road, all members of our community have an opportunity to provide informal feedback on MBA applicants, so make every connection count.

Is my admission decision impacted by not having an Admissions Connection?

The Admissions Connection is optional and applicants will not be penalized if they decide to not take advantage of it. Keep in mind, however, attending a session helps show the committee that you have a genuine interest in getting to know the Texas McCombs MBA program.

Each cycle, the Texas McCombs Full-Time MBA Admissions Team reviews MBA application requirements to ensure our admissions process is as equitable and fair as possible. This upcoming cycle, we are excited to announce some changes to our application components that help reduce bias and ensure our application process continues to be accessible and inclusive.

Being human centered and future focused is at the core of what we do at Texas McCombs, and the updates to our application components were informed by the evaluation processes our MBA students experience in their job search, while also increasing the opportunities for applicants to showcase who they are as an individual. Stay tuned for our blog series on key application components over the summer and mark your calendar for our Full-Time MBA Class of 2025 application opening in August 2022.

APPLICATION COMPONENTS FOR THE 2022-2023 ADMISSIONS CYCLE

Our admissions committee dedicates itself to a meticulous, holistic review of each application. Our objective is to determine if you are a good fit for Texas McCombs and to be sure that we are the right school for you and your goals. There are no fixed criteria or weighted portions of the application. The following application components will be required this cycle:

Standardized Test (GMAT, GRE, Executive Assessment) or merit-based test waiver
English Proficiency Test (TOEFL, IELTS) or waiver (international students only)
Undergraduate transcripts and graduate transcripts (if applicable)
Resume
One Professional Letter of Recommendation
One Written Essay
Video Assessment
Optional: Texas McCombs Admissions Connection

APPLICATION DEADLINES

Applications for the Full-Time MBA program are accepted in three rounds, and the program enrolls annually every August. Applications must be submitted by 11:59 PM Central Time on the deadline date for each round.

Round 1: October 11, 2022
Round 2: January 5, 2023
Round 3: March 28, 2023

CHANGES TO TESTING REQUIREMENTS

To provide MBA candidates with more flexibility, we are excited to share that applicants have more options than ever before when considering how to complete the standardized test requirement in their application. All applicants are required to submit a GMAT, GRE, or Executive Assessment (EA) score. We will waive the testing requirement if:

Expired (taken 5+ years ago) GMAT, GRE, or EA score is submitted or
General Test Waiver (merit-based) is approved

Standardized exams like the GRE, GMAT, and EA help us to evaluate a candidate’s academic preparedness for the rigor of business school and is also one metric used to compare candidates within a large pool of applicants. However, there are some scenarios where a candidate’s application might shine without the standardized test.

Note that the majority of applicants applying to the Full-Time MBA program take either the GMAT or the GRE due to the competitiveness of the pool. In many cases, having a strong GMAT or GRE score will make you more competitive for both admission and scholarship opportunities. Learn more about the different test options.

CHANGES TO ESSAY REQUIREMENTS

The written essay is a critical means of assessing an applicant’s background and goals, communication and writing skills, and motivation for attending Texas McCombs. In order to streamline the application process, the Full-Time MBA Admissions Team has reduced the number of required essays from two to one.

The essay prompt for the 2022-2023 admissions cycle is as follows:

Picture yourself at graduation. Describe how you spent your time as a Texas McCombs MBA to achieve your personal and professional goals. (500 words)

Additionally, and if applicable, applicants can provide an optional statement in the essay section of the application. Applicants should only provide an optional statement if there is something they wish to explain about their candidacy that is not addressed elsewhere.

VIDEO ASSESSMENT

Texas McCombs is excited to introduce the video assessment as a new application component for the 2022-23 Full-Time MBA admissions cycle. All applicants will complete the video assessment, which will give MBA candidates increased accessibility to the application process and the opportunity to share their story with us in their own voice. Through the video assessment, the Admissions Committee will have a chance to experience the “real” you, beyond a resume, test scores, and transcripts. Lastly, the video assessment will enable Texas McCombs to reduce bias in the admissions process by providing all applicants with a structured and consistent assessment experience.

MBA candidates with a submitted application, whose application fee has been paid or waived will be invited to take part in our Texas McCombs Video Assessment. The video assessment is virtual and on-demand, so applicants can complete it from anywhere in the world at a time in the day convenient to them. The video assessment will help the Admissions Committee evaluate the following competencies that are crucial for the fit and success of our students within the program and their future careers:

Empathy/Inclusivity	Verbal Communication
Collaboration	Self-Awareness

Applicants will be asked to use the video assessment tool to record responses to seven questions, with each response lasting no more than three minutes each. Detailed instructions will be provided with the video assessment invitation so you know what to expect, and applicants will have the opportunity to practice as many times as they wish before completing the final video assessment. Applicants will have seven days from the invitation to complete the final video assessment.

This is your time to show us your personality and enthusiasm! We recommend that you prepare for the video assessment similarly to how you might prepare for an interview. Think reflectively about your work experience, strengths, weaknesses, and practice your delivery. More tips will be provided in the coming weeks.

TEXAS McCOMBS ADMISSIONS CONNECTION

One of the most vital parts of the MBA application process at Texas McCombs is the human component. We pride ourselves on getting to know you at a personal level during the admissions process and will continue to provide hundreds of virtual and in-person ways for you to meet our students, alumni, faculty, and Admissions Team.

We invite all MBA applicants to close out their application process by signing up for a “Texas McCombs Admissions Connection” after completing all other MBA application requirements. These live, virtual get-to-know-you sessions are an opportunity for our applicants to engage directly with a Full-Time MBA student. While not required, registering for and attending an Admissions Connection session is highly encouraged.

These sessions are NOT your traditional admissions interview. MBA applicants will have 15 minutes with a member of the McCombs Ambassador Committee (MAC) to ask questions about the program/student experience, discuss information about their candidacy that is not addressed elsewhere, and align on the next steps in the application process. You will be able to choose your host whenever you register for a slot. There is no evaluative component to this session, although your student host will be able to pass along any information you share to the admissions committee.

Because the session will last approximately 15 minutes, we recommend applicants to come prepared with 3–5 questions about the MBA program and/or next steps in the application process

The Full-Time MBA – Applying in Round 3

Our Round 3 deadline for the full-time MBA Program is right around the corner on March 29, 2022!

One of the most common questions we receive from applicants is whether they should submit in Round 3 or wait until the following cycle to apply. Round 3 tends to be a smaller round because some candidates simply didn’t realize an MBA was an option or on their radar until later in the application cycle. Historically, we always have spots available in Round 3, but each year the number varies. We can’t say it enough– A strong, complete, well-researched application always stands out.

“The Admissions Committee uses Round 3 to fill out the incoming class. We wouldn’t have a Round 3 if we didn’t need it! Some of our best students applied in the last round – maybe they were waiting for that higher score or promotion, or maybe they just decided a little later in the year that they wanted to pursue an MBA.”

Below we break down some of the reasons why students chose to apply in the third round, and why it was still a great option for them.

Bradford Smith
Full-Time MBA ’22

Bradford Smith, Full-Time MBA ’22, shared his experience applying in Round 3.

In the summer of 2019, Bradford Smith started thinking about business school. He took the GMAT to see how he would do and thought that if he studied more he could score higher and be ready to apply. He and his girlfriend were living in Los Angeles, California at the time and both agreed they could both use a change of scenery. He noticed the Round 2 deadline was quickly approaching and decided to wait until Round 3 to give him extra time to study for tests and submit his application.

“I didn’t feel comfortable applying with the GMAT score I had, so I figured I’d wait until Round 3. I studied more and got a score that I felt good about and thought well, I don’t want to have to wait another year so I’ll just go for it.”

To prepare his application, Bradford first reached out to his recommender to give them as much time as possible. During this time he was actively studying for the GMAT and taking practice tests. He also asked his friends to read through his essays and give him feedback. He suggests that applicants be honest about their stories and try to share as much as they can about themselves.

“It’s a tough process because you get, at least from my perspective, self-conscious. It’s hard to have the blinders on because there’s always going to be someone that has an impressive resume or a crazier story, but everyone has something unique about them. It’s more about being honest and not trying to fit into a box. I wouldn’t worry about trying to scrape something together that makes you think you’re more impressive. I would focus on something that is genuine, and have some of your good friends read it because odds are, they probably know a lot about you and can help you craft it.”

Renee Beauchamp
Full-Time MBA ’22

Renee Beauchamp, Full-Time MBA ’22, also applied to McCombs in Round 3.

In July 2019, Renee was living in New York and decided she wanted to go to business school. By that time, the Round 1 deadline had passed and she knew she wanted to take some time with her application.

“I listened to the advice that most business schools tell hopeful admits – to apply when I felt I had the strongest application. Fall of 2019, I was focused on building and strengthening that application until I just had to go for it in Round 3.”

Renee says she chose McCombs because of the connections she felt between the admissions team and the student that interviewed her. She was looking to be in an energetic, entrepreneurial city and had visited Austin before and loved it. When she was admitted, she had a little more than two months’ notice before starting school, and within a month, she was living in Austin.

“I understand the worry associated with this process especially when you feel like you’re late to the game. I encourage applicants to stay positive, submit the best application you can, and be confident that that’s enough. Also, it doesn’t hurt to create advocates! Build relationships with people who can root for you and put in a good word.”

Tips from the Admissions Committee

Submit your application only when you’re 99.9% ready. Supplemental application materials submitted after a round deadline are incredibly risky since there is no guarantee the Admissions Committee will see them. Once your file is read, we will not re-review again based upon new information received post-deadline.
Don’t wait until the last minute! We are not able to accept applications submitted after 11:59 PM Central Time on the day of the deadline. Stay aware of deadlines, and give yourself extra time to account for technical difficulties that arise for some applicants every round, every year. In the interest of a fair process, we don’t make exceptions to our deadlines, no matter what reason you have for a late submission.
Be patient. The Admissions Committee does not begin reviewing applications for the Full-Time MBA program until the round deadline has passed.
The Admissions Committee does not provide individual feedback on applications, out of fairness to all applicants and due to the volume of requests we receive.

Rodrigo Malta Headshot

Rodrigo Malta – Managing Director of MBA Recruiting and Admissions

Rodrigo Malta, also known as Digo, is originally from Brazil and immigrated to the United States during high school. He earned his MBA from the University of Texas at Austin, McCombs School of Business, and his bachelor’s degree in management from Missouri State University. Before and after his MBA, Digo worked for Fortune 100 companies in internal audit and marketing in the telecom and technology industries.

One of Rodrigo’s proudest moments was becoming a United States citizen in 2008, which was the same year Rodrigo joined Texas McCombs as the Associate Director of MBA Admissions, Lead Diversity Recruiter for the Full-Time MBA program.

“I was a McCombs Ambassador Committee co-chair as an MBA student and that experience ignited my passion for admissions and higher education. In 2008, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to transition from tech to higher education and never looked back.”

He now serves as Managing Director of MBA Marketing, Recruitment and Admissions over Texas McCombs’ Full Time, Evening, Weekend – Dallas, Weekend – Houston, and Executive MBA programs. His most rewarding experience is working with his team and representing the Longhorn Community all over the world. Digo is an advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion, and is passionate about building a collaborative work environment where individuals can be their authentic selves.

“We bring together students from all corners of the world with unique personal stories and varied professional backgrounds. Add in our award-winning faculty members and this is the perfect recipe for lively class discussions and an amazing learning environment.”

Digo says the best thing you can do when applying to Texas McCombs is to be authentic and ensure your application highlights who you are personally and professionally.

“Focus on the things you can control and be yourself. Engage with us in a purposeful manner, but do not over do it.”

Stacey Batas – Director of Full-Time MBA Recruiting and Admissions

Stacey Batas has been a part of the McCombs family since 2015. Prior to working at McCombs, she worked for an Austin-based marketing firm focused on college and university admissions that helped clients with social media, branding, search campaigns, publication design, etc. She also spent 8 years in admissions and marketing at a private college in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she managed events and recruited transfer and international students. While in Charlotte, she attained her MA degree in Higher Education.

“I was an admissions tour guide in undergrad and fell in love! I found my calling in higher education at the ripe old age of 21, when I started my career in admissions. I loved the industry so much that I got a master’s in higher education in 2012 and have been in various roles in the industry ever since. My husband is also a graduate of the Texas McCombs Evening MBA program, so I’m a member of Cohort 5 as well!”

Stacey says the best thing about being a part of the Admissions Team is working with the student ambassadors and helping newly admitted students. Moving to Austin and starting the program can be stressful but being able to help them through the process is incredibly rewarding for the team.

“I love working with the student ambassadors. Seeing how they grow professionally and personally over the course of the two-year program is so rewarding. I also love to travel, so visiting our prospective students on their turf is a great perk of the job. I’ve been able to visit applicants in India, Latin America, and all across East Asia.”

When applying to McCombs, Stacey advises prospective students to not rush their applications and take some time to proofread everything before clicking ‘submit.’ Many of the mistakes the admissions team sees on applications are because they were rushed or waited until the last minute. When looking over applications, Stacey says the most notable are the applicants who have a cohesive story.

“I love the applicants who have a cohesive story. I understand their background, why they want an MBA, and what they want for themselves after the MBA. Really think about how to weave that story throughout your application.”

She also warns about some things applicants should not do:

“While we do want our applicants to interact with us, remember that ‘more’ is not always better. Registering for and no-showing to a ton of events can reflect poorly on your application.”

Stacey isn’t always looking over MBA applications, she also loves driving her Vespa— she uses it daily to get to Rowling Hall —along with spending time with her husband and dog, Phoebe Cates.

Paul Mannie – Full-Time MBA Recruiting and Admissions Officer

Paul Mannie is a Longhorn Alum with a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to becoming a part of the Full-Time MBA Admissions team in September 2021, he worked as a Student Program Coordinator for UT for Me – Powered by Dell Scholars. Paul is also currently pursuing a Master in Higher Education and Leadership from the University of Texas.

“I got into admissions after a internship with UT’s undergraduate admissions office. Helping recruit historically underrepresented students just seemed perfect. McCombs brought together a lot of my professional passions and the work environment is the talk of the town.”

Paul says he loves talking to current and prospective MBA students to learn about what they are passionate about and where they see themselves going in the future.

“Ask all of the questions. Even that one that you thought ‘no, probably shouldn’t.’ Just be mindful of who you are asking (admissions officer vs. alumni vs. current student).”

Before submitting your MBA application, Paul suggests reviewing it as a whole to be sure it effectively captures the whole story.

“Tell your story and tie together the pieces of your application to form a complete picture. This takes some introspection and looking back on your application as a whole before hitting submit or interviewing.”

Paul warns that while excitement about the program is encouraged, you should not try to “overdo it.”

“Don’t overdo it. If this is where you’re supposed to end up, it’ll work out. Come to the events you need to, talk to the people you need to. You don’t have to come to everything nor talk to everyone.”

When Paul isn’t on the Forty Acres or studying for class, he could be found hiking the trails of Austin, spending time with his puppy Yeaux-Pierre, or playing the trombone.

Patrick Olson – Full-Time MBA Recruiting and Admissions Officer

Patrick Olson grew up in Hopkinton, Massachusetts. He earned his bachelor’s in Business from the University of South Carolina and a master’s from the LBJ School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin. Prior to starting at McCombs in October 2021. He worked as an Admissions and Recruitment Coordinator for the UT College of Pharmacy.

Patrick got his first start in admissions as a student ambassador as an undergrad and found a passion for higher education and recruiting. While Patrick is fairly new to the team, he has had the best time meeting and working closely with our McCombs Ambassador Committee.

“Working in Admissions was my first job out of college and I’ve enjoyed every aspect of it. McCombs is a special place to work because of the caliber of students. Our MBA students are both driven and well-rounded. McCombs students are proud to call themselves alumni of the program and regularly give back to their community. I thrive off the Texas McCombs energy.”

Patrick says video essays catch his attention the most when going through applications.

“I am a sucker for the video essays. I love seeing the creativity students put into their video and it helps me see a different perspective that isn’t typically available in the traditional application. That said, your video doesn’t have to be academy award quality to be “good.” An iPhone and a location that is meaningful to you is perfect!”

For those preparing for a virtual interview, Patrick has some advice.

“Don’t read off notes or a second monitor when interviewing virtually. Your answers should be honest and authentic. I rather you tell me one specific story about yourself than ten surface-level fast facts. You will never be able to share your entire life story in an application, so focus on telling one good story.”

When Patrick is not talking to students or prospective applicants, you can find him spending quality time with his partner, young twins, and their puppy, Maddie. Patrick is an avid runner and participates in local road and trail races–his favorite being the Longhorn Run, which happens annually on the UT campus. He also spends time volunteering with the Young Men’s Business League and Austin Sunshine Camps.

“If you can, please visit our campus and Rowling Hall! It is easy to compare and the quantifiable difference between MBA programs, but it is so important you feel comfortable, welcome and safe in your MBA program. The McCombs community and the city of Austin are what make our program different from any other MBA program in the world. Come see for yourself!”
