JOB SUMMARY:

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) supports the U.S. Congress in its oversight responsibilities by conducting original research and analysis to assess how well federally-funded programs are operating and assist with the development of legislation and appropriation reviews.

As a Financial Management and Assurance (FMA) 2013 summer intern, you will learn how to conduct federal audits and apply that knowledge as part of a team. Financial Auditors participate in a wide range of engagements with the overall objective of strengthening accountability for the Federal government’s assets and operations. They perform financial audits and analyses, promote financial management best practices, assess internal controls, and identify and support improvements in a variety of financial areas affecting program performance. You will assist GAO auditors in planning and conducting audits of agency programs and operations. You will collect appropriate data, analyze the data, develop data-based findings and conclusions, and present the information both orally and in writing to diverse audiences.

Successful interns who have worked a minimum of 400 hours during their internship may have an opportunity for a permanent position with us. The ability to convert to a permanent or term appointment with 400 hours of work experience acquired through GAO’s internship program is applicable to GAO ONLY. Internships generally take place during the months of May through September. Internships are limited to 16 weeks; interns work a minimum of 10 weeks.

DUTIES:

•Assist senior financial auditors in performing financial related audit work
•Assist in preparing, analyzing, and interpreting accounting data
•Assist with analyzing data and identifying problems
•Brief supervisor and other team members on the results of research and analysis
•Using accounting information and audit results to help draft recommendations to improve internal controls and accountability in government operations
•Prepare written summaries and draft written products as necessary for the use of senior financial auditors
•Provide responses to specific questions on accounting and/or auditing issues
•Carry out routine assignments independently in support of GAO audits

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

To qualify for the GS-7 level, applicants must have (a)completed requirements for a Bachelors degree with Superior Academic Achievement and be enrolled in a graduate level program leading to a degree in accounting or similar discipline OR (b) completed between 18 and 35 semester hours or 27 and 53 quarter hours of a graduate level program leading to a graduate degree in accounting or similar discipline.
