Accounting doctoral student Brian Monsen, Ph.D. ’18, was named a 2016 Deloitte Foundation Doctoral Fellow. Monsen will receive a $25,000 grant from the organization to support his final year of coursework and the subsequent year to complete his doctoral dissertation.

“Receiving the Deloitte Foundation Doctoral Fellowship is an honor and a testament to the great faculty we have at McCombs,” said Monsen. “I have been very fortunate to work with extremely smart, patient professors who want to see me succeed. This award really reflects on them and the tremendous job they do in encouraging, mentoring and teaching Ph.D. students.”

Monsen’s research areas include financial accounting and reporting, accounting regulation, corporate governance, and financial services. The award lends credibility to his research interests that he hopes will help him obtain a faculty position at a top university.

“Brian’s selection says a lot about his potential and about the quality of the students in the doctoral program,” said Michael Clement, KPMG Centennial Professor of Accounting at McCombs. “Our students have been selected as Deloitte Foundation Fellows in four of the last five years.”

Each year, approximately 100 universities are invited to apply for the fellowship. Monsen was nominated by Clement and then named one of 10 Deloitte Foundation Doctoral Fellow’s by a selection committee composed of four renowned accounting professionals established by the Deloitte Foundation.
