MS Finance Imri Ganiel Recipient of Prestigious NCAA Scholarship

Each year, the Master of Science in Finance attracts some of the top athletes here at The University of Texas at Austin and beyond. Triathletes, swimmers, baseball stars, football players, and even an Olympic gold medalist, the MS in Finance recognizes that the dedication athletes give to their sports translates directly to the dedication they can give to business.  So it comes as no surprise that one of our very own Master of Science in Finance students was awarded a scholarship to recognize his excellence in both academics and athletics.

MSF Class of 2019 student Imri Ganiel was one of two recipients of NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships, alongside fellow swimmer Madisyn Cox. The one-time $7,500 scholarships are awarded after each corresponding sport season (fall, winter and spring). The NCAA awards 29 scholarships to men and 29 scholarships to women for each term. It is just the fifth time in UT history that a pair of Longhorns have claimed this honor in the same calendar year and the first since 1988. Ganiel and Cox mark the 27th and 28th athletes at the University of Texas to earn this prestigious scholarship.

As a swimmer, Imri began his career at the age of 12, and throughout the years represented Israel as a part of the Junior and Senior national swim teams, ultimately going on to represent Israel at the 30th games held in London. After completing Israel’s mandatory military service, he was recruited to swim for the University of Texas Men’s Swimming and Diving Team. He was a member of three national championship title teams, with four Big XII titles. With an original undergraduate goal of pursuing medicine, Imri realized senior year that his interests were in finance and the economy.

Upon completing his undergraduate degree, Imri wanted to gain a solid foundation in business and finance skills that could open more possibilities for him in the future. “I was looking for a program that would not only teach me a lot, but challenge me. I knew UT has a great business school, which helped make the decision a lot easier.” The fact that the program was completed in 10-months and was open to all undergraduate majors attracted him as well as a Biochemistry undergraduate. “I had no previous background in finance or business; therefore, I was looking for a program that will teach me a lot. I enjoy being a student and, through my experience as a student-athlete, was confident I could handle the academic intensive course load.”

Imri cites training as an athlete as strong preparation for the academic rigor of the program. With 9 water workouts and 5 weight room workouts weekly (a total of around 22 hours!), he entered the program with strong time management and organization skills. “I knew what I had to do every day in order to successfully complete all of my assignments and projects. I would try to do a bit every day rather than trying to cram everything the last night.” Imri also saw the importance of “non-school” days on the weekend, but ultimately, prioritizing his training and academics helped him succeed. “Scheduling my time and working hard all semester long has definitely saved me during midterms/finals time, especially when it came to getting more hours of sleep.”

Now as a MS in Finance student, Imri has excelled in his studies. When dealing with an academically intensive program, Imri believes that his experience as a student-athlete has helped him stay organized and succeed in this program. Currently enrolled in extra courses, Ganiel has maintained a top degree of academic excellence in the program.

The MS Finance program is excited about Imri’s future. “I accepted a position as an analyst with Raymond James’ oil and gas equity research team in Houston and will be starting in mid-June.” Beyond that, he sees many possible paths in finance open to him. We are proud to have him as a Texas MSF future alum and can’t wait to see what the future holds.

The Texas Master of Science Programs would like to extend a warm congratulations to both Imri and Madisyn on their well-deserved scholarships.

Student Name:

David Garza

Graduating Class:

Class of 2018

Undergraduate Alma Mater:

I’ve always found the business world interesting, especially its mix of logical reasoning and human intuition. Finance is a great mix of both theory and practice. I can both study the subject in a formal manner, and then work with others to find the best solution to a financial problem. I especially like the interaction between the financial and engineering departments when planning a new product.

What are you most looking forward to in your program?

I look forward to learning plenty, more than I have up until now. I hope I learn lots form my classmates, who all come from diverse academic backgrounds. I want to be able to work with others and figure out how to do everything as best as we can.

Texas MS #StudentSpotlight: Abhas Mishra, MSF 2018

Program:

Master of Science in Finance

Student Name:

Abhas Mishra

Graduating Class:

Class of 2018

Undergraduate Alma Mater:

University of Texas at Austin, Electrical Engineering

About Abhas:

I am Abhas Mishra and I am an avid traveler, photographer, and an aspiring finance professional. Three years ago, I completed my undergraduate in Electrical Engineering from UT Austin and went on to work for a large technology consulting firm as a Business Analyst. Business process engineering, requirements gathering and functional solution designing were some of my responsibilities. After over 1.5 years of consulting, I took a dramatic step of going solo backpacking for 6 months around various parts of India. I became a freelance photographer, writer and a blogger within a short span of 2 months. The experience taught me a lot and has brought me to where I am today: here at the prestigious McCombs School of Business.

Proudest Accomplishment:

Sustaining a positive mindset through the 6 months of rugged experience in rural parts of India is my proudest accomplishment. Challenges – such as going without food and collecting rain water to drink for 3 days, not being able to verbally communicate with anyone for a week, and feeling debilitated due to sickness while in a tribal village for 5 days – pushed me far beyond my comfort zone. Being a solo traveler, at every turn, I had to pick myself up and motivate myself to look beyond the discomforts. I feel proud to have gone through such a rigorous experience knowing that I am ready for more challenges in life ahead.

Why did you choose the MSF Program?

I had known Finance to be an area of interest since undergraduate. I would invest small amounts in the stock market and try to understand the dynamics and its drivers. Many of my friends went on to become finance professionals soon after college. Upon returning from my travels, I decided to pursue finance as a career. I appeared for the CFA Level I exam in December 2016 and passed it. After 4 months of rigorous studying for the exam, I realized there was not a moment when I felt stressed or disinterested. I knew Finance was definitely my field to pursue. When I applied to various MSF programs around the nation, Texas MSF was on the top of my list. Here I am today, a part of one of the most prestigious institutions in the world.

What are you most looking forward to in your program?

My highlight for this year is building new and long lasting friendships with my cohort. Going through classes, learning and building skills will surely be a priority, but I believe the company I keep for the rest of the year will truly determine the kind of experience I create for myself here at UT. Being surrounded by smart and driven individuals motivates me to go beyond my limits. Moreover, I hope to nurture professional relationships that will last beyond this year.

#TXMS Students Giving Back in Harvey Relief Efforts

A Small Act of Service – Nishtha Sharma

The impact of Hurricane Harvey continues to felt across the gulf regions of Texas, with many still working to provide themselves and their families with basic necessities like water, food, and a place to sleep. In this time, Texas and the nation has come together to support those in need in a way that has been incredibly heart-warming to watch. One #TXMS Finance student mobilized her efforts after having her own family impacted by the devastation caused to the region.

Nishtha Sharma, MSF 2018, is a University of Texas undergrad alum in Biochemistry. Her journey as an MS Finance graduate student was only just beginning when Harvey hit. Her own family was in the path of the storm and were ultimately rescued from rising flood waters. Rather than feel helpless in Austin as she watched her family and friends struggle with the event, Nishtha began a Harvey relief drive, collecting canned foods, water, blankets, and first aid kids to be taken to Houston shelters in need of these supplies. Nishtha called this a “small act of service,” but it is the many small acts like hers that will allow so many families to rebuild in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.

Being awarded a full athletic scholarship to pursue a degree. Paraguay unfortunately has not yet developed a successful higher education system. I was seeking an opportunity to seek for better education, and I wanted the opportunity to study outside of Paraguay. Thankfully, UT saw my athletic talent and offered me the greatest opportunity I have had in my life. Here I am, doing my best to honor this opportunity.

The desire to overcome a challenge and to be challenged. The McCombs School of Business is prestigious, academically brilliant and very tough. I wanted to be part of those few selected students. Texas MS #StudentSpotlight: Harrison Tran, MSF 2018

Program:

Master of Science in Finance

Student Name:

Harrison Tran

Graduating Class:

Class of 2018

About Harrison:

Born and raised in Texas, I attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison where I was a member of the Swimming & Diving Team and studied Economics. I’m most proud of the way I finished my career at Wisconsin. I progressed as a walk-on to a member of our Leadership Council and Olympic Trials and NCAA Championship Teams, all the while developing problem-solving skills through Economics. More importantly, I developed strong relationships with my teammates through our failures and successes.

Why did you choose the MSF Program?

The Texas MSF program will enhance my ability to apply my economics background to finance. There is an incredible amount of value in the technical training, professional development, and networking opportunities that are offered within this accelerated 10-month program.

Women’s Roundtable Breakfast

This past Friday, female students from the MS Marketing, MS Finance, and MS Business Analytics programs sat down for a roundtable breakfast with successful women from typically male-dominated fields. The effort to connect young women with industry leaders was initiated by Linda Vytlacil, Walmart VP in Data and Analytics, when the MSBA program kicked off four years ago in order to provide mentoring to young women beginning their careers. Other companies represented included IBM, JDA, W20, AT&T, Teacher Retirement System of Texas, Bank of Texas, EY, and Facebook. While much was to be taken away from this roundtable, we’ve captured a few of the key pieces of advice.

Defining Your Definition of Success

Whether you’re kicking off your career or re-evaluating your goals, you need to define what success means to you. At this point in time, success could be climbing the career ladder. Or it could be focusing on family and taking a job that allows you to spend more time at home. There is no wrong answer, but you must look within yourself to determine what that answer is.

Find a Mentor or Support Group

When starting your career, it is important to surround yourself with people who will have your best interests in mind. Whether it’s family or colleagues, you need a group of people you can turn to. In addition to building a strong support group, it is also important to find mentors throughout your career. Lisa Perry from JDA emphasized the importance of not only finding a mentor but also finding one who is your opposite in order to push you and offer different perspectives.

How to be Assertive and Have Confidence in the Workplace

One topic that came up at multiple tables was how to overcome the negative stereotype of a strong woman and be more assertive. The women seemed almost unanimous in that the best way to overcome to stereotype is to ignore it altogether. Perception is reality, and the more you buy into or believe a particular thing, the more it becomes true. If we, as women, believe that there is a gender gap, the stereotype will continue to build. It is important to let the strength of your work define you as opposed to your gender.
