MPA track: Financial Reporting and Assurance
Graduation date: Summer 2013
Why did you choose the MPA program?
Besides having a fantastic reputation, the MPA program at UT appealed to me for several reasons. There is a strong commitment to diversity (in all senses of the word) in the t-MPA program, which meant that I wouldn’t be out of place with an unconventional academic background, and that I could actually use it to my advantage. The dedication that the program has to preparing you for recruiting as well as the opportunities for career exploration was also a huge plus for me. Finally, I had previously really fallen in love with Texas and Texans. You can get the best of all worlds here – urban, rural, sophisticated, rugged, and everything in between. And the people are all incredibly welcoming, very generous and genuine.
What do you like most so far about your MPA experience?
When I first came here, I knew very little about the accounting profession. All I knew were some numerical basics. The professors do a wonderful job not only explaining the technical details, but educating you about what being an accountant really means; they give you a sense of the day to day routine, the career path, and also of the bigger picture that accountants fit into. Now I’m proud to tell people that I’m in accounting, and really passionate about the value we bring to society.
What advice do you have for current students for getting the most out of their MPA experience?
Recruiting is a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn about navigating the “softer” side of business and to learn about what’s important to you in a potential job. Figure out what sort of group dynamics you work well in, find your personal leadership style, develop confidence in your own communication abilities. A lot of people worry overly much about blending into the business crowd with the right suit, the right lingo, and the right personality; worry instead about making your quirks work for you. It’s all about learning to capitalize on what makes you stand out from the crowd. You can start developing your professional niche right now, in a hugely supportive environment, backed by a fantastic brand and reputation.
What’s your favorite spot on campus?
When it comes to quiet studying, I really love the Life Sciences Library in the Tower. The light is great and it has a very classical university ambiance. The plaza outside of the Harry Random Center is beautiful in the morning and a perfect place to sit with your coffee and relax for a few minutes before class.
Where are your favorite places to go and favorite things to do in Austin?
I’m a foodie, and this city has too many fantastic spots to eat to name. Get up a little early on Saturday and head to JMueller BBQ for greasy, tender ribs and inventive sides (the baked squash is one of my favorites). Hula Hut has beautiful views of the lake and delicious food and drink menus.
If you have a car, there are a lot of different state parks and outdoors adventure within relatively short drives of Austin. Lost Maples State Park and Enchanted Rock are both lovely, and you can camp in luxury.
