Application Tips: Should You Take the GMAT or GRE Exam?

You may have noticed that for fall 2024, submitting the GMAT/GMAT Focus or GRE is optional for the MPA admissions application. Applicants will not be disadvantaged in the admissions process if they do not submit test scores, and applicants who feel that their test scores reflect their potential for success in graduate school may submit scores for consideration. Keep in mind that the MPA Admissions Committee takes all submitted application materials into account holistically.

So should you submit GMAT/GMAT Focus, or GRE test scores for your MPA application?

It depends on the strength of the rest of your application. We provide detailed information in this blog post.

You’ve decided to take either the GMAT/GMAT Focus, or GRE. Which exam should you take?

Consider these factors before you decide:

  • We don’t have a preference. The MPA admissions committee does not have a preference. Either test can demonstrate academic potential for business school.
  • Other programs may have a preference. Many graduate accounting programs started accepting the GRE in addition to the GMAT or GMAT Focus. Be sure to check the application requirements for all your programs of interest. Some programs may only accept the GMAT or GMAT Focus.
  • Are you applying to more than one master’s degree? The GRE may be the best choice for those who are applying to the Texas McCombs MPA plus another master’s degree—like economics—which may require the GRE. Taking the GRE would allow you to apply to both programs with one exam.
  • You may have a preference. If you are still trying to decide, take a practice test for each exam. You may find that you prefer one test over the other.
  • Plan ahead, regardless. Whichever exam you choose, be sure to set aside time to study. Take the test early and reserve some buffer time in case you wish to retake the exam. If you choose a retake, we will review the score report with the highest total score (V+Q). Remember—it can take approximately 3-4 weeks for the official scores to be received and uploaded to your UT application.

Please note: If you report GMAT or GRE test scores or a future test date in the admissions application, we will hold on a decision until the official test scores are received from the testing agency. Please notify the MPA admissions team if your testing plans change after you submit your application.

GMAT online exam availability extended through December 31, 2020

As you plan for the upcoming application cycle and uncertainty remains with the pandemic, the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) – who administers the GMAT exam – is continuing to offer the flexibility to take the GMAT™ exam either online or at test centers where it is safe and available. You can take the GMAT Online exam through the end of the year, and appointment slots are available now through December 31. Additional availability will be added on a rolling basis.

TEST CENTERS OPENING
Over 80% of the global test center network supporting the GMAT exam is now open, including eight test centers in China, with the planned opening of one of our test centers in Beijing in early August. Centers in China are operating at close to 100% capacity, including some with extended hours to support additional appointment demands. Test centers in other parts of the world continue to scale up operating capacity, though many are still operating at lower capacity to comply with social distancing and new health and safety measures. An up-to-date status of test center availability can be found on mba.com.

GMAT Online Exam Registration Is Now Open

Registration is now open for the GMAT™ Online exam, an interim alternative to the test center GMAT exam.

Appointments are available for test dates as early as April 20, 2020 and extend through June 15, 2020. Future appointments will be added as needed.

The benefit of the GMAT Online exam is that you can schedule your appointment time 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, allowing for greater flexibility during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The GMAT Online exam will offer:

  • Exam Structure & Time – The interim exam is similar in structure to the GMAT exam delivered in test centers and has been adapted for near-term access on an online testing platform. The exam has the same number of items and time for completion across the Quant, Verbal and IR sections (the AWA section is not included). Altogether, the GMAT Online exam will take approximately 3 hours to complete – 2 hours and 45 minutes for the exam and 15 minutes for the online proctor check-in process.
  • Exam Scores – Section and Total Score and associated percentiles will be on the same score scale as the test center GMAT exam for consistency and will be available to you within one week of the exam appointment.
  • Access – The GMAT Online exam is accessible on a personal computer with a MAC or Windows operating system that meets the required technical specifications. You will be provided with detailed information on these requirements and will have an opportunity to run a system test prior to your test date.
  • Accommodations for Candidates with Disabilities – Accommodations will be available in mid-May to assist test takers with disabilities.
  • Availability  – The interim exam is available in all markets globally except for mainland China, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, and  Slovenia due to regulatory and data privacy rules.
  • Security – The check-in and security protocols are designed to account for and accommodate the online delivery model, and remote human proctors will be used to maintain the test integrity.
