McCombs Ranked 2nd for Best Professors and Campus Environment

Originally posted by Jeremy Simon in McCombs Today.

McCombs School of Business students are among the happiest in the nation when it comes to both their campus environment and the quality of their professors, according to new survey results from the Princeton Review.

McCombs placed among the top 10 in two categories — best campus environment and best professors — out of the Princeton Review’s 11 attribute rankings. Based on student responses to survey questions, McCombs ranked:

  • No. 2 for best campus environment, based on student responses regarding how happy they are and how they rate the campus community. Only UCLA scored higher for campus environment.
  • No. 2 for best professors, based on student responses regarding how good their professors are as teachers and how accessible professors are outside the classroom. Only Berkeley professors were rated more highly.

Although earning silver medals in two categories marked a banner year for McCombs, it wasn’t the first time students have given such high marks to the business school. With this latest survey result, the Princeton Review has now placed McCombs professors among the top 10 in the nation for four straight years.

UT Vaults into Top 25 of World’s Elite Universities

The University of Texas at Austin vaulted into the top 25 of the world’s elite universities in the 2012-13 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, considered one of the most authoritative assessments of universities.

The university’s ranking jumped to No. 25 from No. 29 in the 2011-12 rankings. The university achieved higher scores in all the major ranking categories such as teaching, research and innovation.

The rankings’ editor noted that The University of Texas at Austin’s gain was striking in that it bucked the trend of other U.S. universities and was made against strengthening global competition.

“UT Austin’s impressive performance this year sees it enter the top 25 of the world’s best universities,” editor Phil Baty said. “Even more remarkably, this jump from 29 to 25 comes amidst an alarming sector-wide decline for the U.S., with 51 institutions falling down the table in the face of mounting competition from heavy-spending Asian nations. UT Austin is one of a minority of American universities resilient to the challenge posed by the East in 2012, and it is rightly rewarded with a place in the world’s top 25.”

President Bill Powers comments on the ranking in Tower Talk.

MPA Alumni Stories

Department of Accounting alumni, faculty members, staff and friends are participating in our centennial celebration by sharing their memories. Here are a few excerpts from stories related to the MPA program.

My Nontraditional MPA

by Robert Sabochick, MPA, Class of 2010

…So, what was so non-traditional about my MPA? Obviously there are all the incredible things that come with living in a city like Austin that made this one year something completely new for me. Halloween on 6th Street, Austin City Limits (though I’m still bummed that the Beastie Boys had to cancel) and UT football, to name a few things, all bring back some wonderful memories.

However, the school and the program itself are different in that, not only do I have the same kinds of amazing memories, but I also developed my accounting knowledge and skills and my perspective and professionalism during this one year in a way that I’ve carried with me every day since graduation.

Longhorns Everywhere!

by Brian Lendecky, BBA / MPA, Class of 1999

Being first a proud alumnus of the MPA program and now proud to be an instructor in our department, I love showing my Longhorn pride! I have been very fortunate to teach in our study-abroad CIBER program each of the past 5 years. Whether it be walking around with our students in Paris, Prague, or Hong Kong I am amazed how many times somebody will come up to our group, flash the Hook ‘em Horns sign followed by “Class of ‘__”. The attached photo is of our class tour of downtown Prague in 2009. Our group was in amazement, and it actually turned into a bit of a game, when 17 different people came up to us during our 3 hour tour to let us know they were Longhorns too. One of them was actually a student I had in my first ACC 311 class in the Fall of 2005 and she was now living in Prague.

Texas Wins 2012 NCAA Tournament…In Accounting

Originally posted by Tracy Mueller in McCombs Today.

Burnt orange faithful, rejoice. The University of Texas stormed through March Madness to win yet another NCAA national championship this year.

At least that’s how the tournament would play out if each game’s winner was the school with the most productive accounting researchers. Under those conditions, Texas advanced to the Final Four, where the Longhorns took down Michigan State to win it all. It was a rematch of the 2010 championship game, which Texas also won.

The results are courtesy of a Brigham Young University simulation of the NCAA men’s basketball post-season bracket, based on the research productivity of each school’s accounting department during the last six years.

Accounting Ranked #1 by U.S. News and World Report

U.S. News and World Report released its 2012 annual survey of America’s Best Graduate Schools. The McCombs School of Business had three specialties place in the top 10:

  • Accounting – 1 (Sixth year in a row, and 20th year in a row to be in the top five)
  • Information Systems – 4 (20th year in a row to be in the top five)
  • Entrepreneurship – 7 (16th year in a row to be in the top 10)

Austin in the Top 10

  • The Street, a financial news Web site, included Austin in its list of top 10 cities “poised for greatness” in 2012 based on financial forecasts. Most notable is Austin’s low unemployment rate, low home prices, a blend of state jobs and private-sector employment and support from the University of Texas at Austin.
  • The Business Journals on Numbers cited Austin, Houston, and McAllen-Edinburg as the only cities in the nation’s top 100 metros to increase the number of small businesses between 2008 and 2009.

Increase in Finance Majors Pursuing Accounting

MPA director Jim Franklin and one of our current MPA students were highlighted in a businessweek.com article which stated that finance majors are increasingly adding accounting to their skill set. A couple of notable quotes from the article:

“…The number of finance majors at McCombs who pursued master’s degrees in accounting nearly tripled from fall 2009 to fall 2010, according to Jim Franklin, director of the graduate accounting program. The figure jumped again based on enrollment for this fall, even as undergraduate finance recruiting picked up during the 2010-11 school year.”

“Many more [finance students] now see accounting experience as a way to stand out to financial-services firms, and accounting careers as a potential way to break into finance later if jobs are scarce.”

Texas MPA students pursue not only careers in accounting but also finance-related careers. A list of employers who have recently recruited our students is available on our website.
