Department of Accounting ranked No. 1 by U.S. News

U.S. News and World Report came out this week with its annual Best Business School rankings, and the Department of Accounting at Texas McCombs topped the list at No. 1 for the 13th straight year!

We are very fortunate to have such an phenomenal group of students, faculty, staff, and alumni who continue to make the Department of Accounting the best in the world.  Read the summary of the rankings below, including the Texas McCombs MBA program coming in at No. 19, or on Texas McCombs News.

The Texas McCombs MBA hit No. 19 for the full-time MBA and No. 8 for working professionals. Three of the school’s business specialties were among the ranking’s top 10.

Landing at No. 19, the Texas McCombs Full-Time MBA Program maintained its venerable top-20 position in the 2020 edition of U.S. News & World Report ’s survey of the nation’s best graduate schools of business.

The Texas McCombs MBA has counted itself among the top 20 programs in 27 of the past 28 years. Among public schools, McCombs and the University of North Carolina tied for fifth place, behind the University of California, Berkeley (6, tied), University of Michigan (10), University of Virginia (12, tied), and UCLA (16).

Specialty Rankings

The U.S. News ranking also considers strengths in subject areas. Three McCombs business specialties landed in the top 10:

• Accounting: No. 1 (13th year in a row and 27th year in a row among the top five)
• Information Systems: No. 4 (27th year straight in the top five)
• Entrepreneurship: No. 10 (23rd consecutive year in the top 10)

Working Professional MBA Takes 8th

In the best part-time MBA rankings, McCombs placed at No. 8. The working professional MBA programs at McCombs, which include the Texas Evening MBA, the Texas MBA at Houston, and the Texas MBA at Dallas/Fort Worth, have held top 10 status for the past 10 years.

Texas MPA Alumni Recognized for Top CPA Exam Performance

The American Institute of CPAs announced the winners of the 2017 Elijah Watt Sells Award. This prestigious award is granted to CPA candidates who scored above 95.50 across the four sections of the CPA Exam, passed all four sections on their first attempt, and completed testing in 2017.

Only 58 candidates met the criteria to receive the Elijah Watt Sells Award out of a total of 95,858 individuals who sat for the CPA Exam. Two alumni of the Texas MPA Program were named as recipients: Hyungmin Kim (MPA ‘16) and Maureen Sweet (MPA ‘16). Hyungmin is employed with The Dow Chemical Company in Midland, Michigan, and Maureen is employed with Deloitte Tax, LLP in San Jose, California.

MPA Scholarship for Tax Students

Congratulations to the 2017-2018 Holbrook Scholars! 16 MPA students were selected  to receive the Holbrook Scholarship in Accounting this year. Awards ranged between $5,000 to $10,000.

The Holbrook Scholarship in Accounting is awarded to MPA students who have plans for a career in tax accounting and have demonstrated financial need and academic achievement.

McCombs Accounting Program Ranked #1

The accounting program at the McCombs School of Business has once again been named the nation’s best.

For the eighth consecutive year, McCombs took a clean sweep in accounting, earning the No. 1 spots for its undergraduate, master’s, and Ph.D. programs in the 2017 Public Accounting Report (PAR) Annual Professors Survey. McCombs also topped the list of the most admired accounting programs in the country.

This marks the 13th time in 16 years that McCombs took first place across all three of the PAR categories.

The PAR annual survey is the only one in which accounting faculty (rather than deans or students) rank the best accounting programs in the nation.

Most Admired Accounting Program: No. 1

For the first time, PAR officials asked accounting faculty to name the U.S. college or university that they most admired overall for accounting (excluding their current employers and any schools they attended).

McCombs took first place.

Master’s Ranking: No. 1

McCombs has led the nation at the master’s level in 23 out of the past 24 surveys.

Class of 2017: By the Numbers

The McCombs School of Business will conduct five separate ceremonies on Friday and Saturday, honoring 1,695 new McCombs graduates. They will join more than 95,000 living alumni in 50 states, D.C., four territories, and 107 countries. Hook ’em!

Two alumni of the Texas MPA Program were named as recipients: Charles Sims (MPA ‘15) and Andrew J. Smith (MPA ’16). Charles is employed with EY in Houston, TX, and Andrew is employed with KPMG, LLP in Dallas, TX.
