Is Accounting Right for You?

Are you seeking a stable and rewarding career?

Do you have strong analytical and communication skills?

Do you enjoy creative problem solving and working with others?

Would you like to start your own business or help one grow?

Accounting may be a good fit for you! Individuals with accounting skills work in a variety of settings, such as public accounting, banking, consulting, health care, real estate, technology, nonprofit, government and entertainment.

Accountants provide the financial foundation of business. They are trusted advisors and help companies remain competitive in the global economy. Whereas other professions may be affected by economic down cycles, accountants are in high demand, even in turbulent times.

Did you know that junior-level accountants in a large firm typically make between $68,000-$90,000 per year, and those with more experience can make up to six or seven figures? Here are a few examples from Robert Half, 2018 Salary Guide for Accounting and Finance Professionals:

  • Chief Financial Officer: $119,000-$497,000
  • Controller: $90,500-$220,500
  • Financial Analyst Manager: $83,500-$159,250
  • Forensic Accountant: $75,000-$143,250
  • Internal Audit Manager: $87,500-$167,000
  • Tax Director: $109,500-$268,000

Add 15% to these numbers if you have a graduate degree, CPA license or other certification.

McCombs Accounting Program Ranked #1

Excerpted from McCombs Today:

The accounting program at the McCombs School of Business has once again been named the nation’s best.

For the eighth consecutive year, McCombs took a clean sweep in accounting, earning the No. 1 spots for its undergraduate, master’s, and Ph.D. programs in the 2017 Public Accounting Report (PAR) Annual Professors Survey. McCombs also topped the list of the most admired accounting programs in the country.

This marks the 13th time in 16 years that McCombs took first place across all three of the PAR categories.

The PAR annual survey is the only one in which accounting faculty (rather than deans or students) rank the best accounting programs in the nation.

Most Admired Accounting Program: No. 1

For the first time, PAR officials asked accounting faculty to name the U.S. college or university that they most admired overall for accounting (excluding their current employers and any schools they attended).

McCombs took first place.

Master’s Ranking: No. 1

McCombs has led the nation at the master’s level in 23 out of the past 24 surveys.

Texas MPA Program Highlight: Study Abroad

Gain a global perspective and prepare  for today’s business environment by studying abroad! Texas MPA students have the option to participate in a 5-week summer study program in either Buenos Aires or Prague. Each program consists of two courses that combine to give you 6 hours of graduate credit toward your MPA degree.

Texas MPA Program Highlight: Tax Practicum

Every year, Texas MPA students learn accounting skills through hands-on community volunteerism through the Tax Practicum course. As an optional part of the curriculum, students complete 55 volunteer hours working with Community Tax Centers, a Foundation Communities program that partners with the Internal Revenue Service to implement the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program for low-income filers. In 2016, students became part of the team that helped over 20,000 low-income households with free tax preparation services, resulting in over $34 million in refunds returned to the local economy.

Texas MPA Program Highlight: IIA Certificate

The Internal Audit Certificate Program at The University of Texas at Austin prepares students with the skills and knowledge to help them conduct basic internal audits immediately upon hire, as well as provide a foundation to begin preparing for the Certified Internal Auditor examination. The University of Texas at Austin is a part of the Internal Auditing Education Partnership (IAEP). IAEP program colleges are endorsed by the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA). The IIA recognizes UT-Austin as a university with a high-quality comprehensive internal auditing program. UT-Austin is one of only 24 universities in the world with this designation.
