Labor Day weekend, the Canfield Business Honors Program proudly hosted the Class of 2028 at the annual Leadership Kickoff event, held at the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch in New Braunfels, TX. This two-day retreat was designed to help our incoming freshmen build connections outside the classroom and get acquainted with Canfield BHP community.
The weekend kicked off on the UT Austin campus, where the freshmen gathered for breakfast, received their class shirts, and met with their peer mentor groups. With some opening remarks to set the tone, the students boarded buses and headed to New Braunfels, eager to embark on their adventure.
Upon arrival, the freshmen had some time to explore the ranch, settle into their cabins, and enjoy their lunch. The real excitement began in the afternoon as the students engaged in a variety of team-building activities spread across the ranch. Half of the class tackled the exhilarating ropes course, a favorite that provides a thrilling challenge and fosters team spirit. Guided and supported by the John Newcombe’s team, this activity is always a standout moment for many.
Meanwhile, the other half of the freshmen dove into competitive games designed to test their teamwork and problem-solving skills. The peer mentor groups competed to complete tasks efficiently, earning points and, more importantly, strengthening their bonds. After a few hours of high-energy competition, the students returned to their cabins to prepare for dinner and a lively evening of team chants and activities.
The final day concluded with the convocation ceremony, where freshmen had the opportunity to hear from current students, professors, and the Honors Business Association President. This formal induction into the Canfield BHP marked a significant milestone in their academic journey. Following the ceremony, everyone returned to Austin, energized and ready for the fall semester.
Ruthvik, a peer mentor who has experienced Leadership Kickoff both as a participant and as a volunteer, shared his reflections: “This weekend is a unique chance for students to connect as peers for the first time. It’s one of the few moments when the entire class comes together as a whole, and I cherish the opportunity to bond with my peer mentor group. Leadership Kickoff not only helps freshmen build relationships with each other but also with the other peer mentors, staff, and volunteers involved. The sense of community created in those one and a half days at the ranch is truly unparalleled. It’s an experience worth coming back to as a peer mentor or volunteer after your freshman year.”
The Leadership Kickoff was a resounding success, setting the stage for a fantastic year ahead for the Class of 2028. We look forward to seeing these new Canfield BHP students thrive and make the most of their time at McCombs!
