Alumni Spotlight: Bernardo Burboa Quiroga

Following up from last week’s alumni feature, Bernardo Burboa Quiroga works with Lucious McDaniel at BiteSight!

Bernardo was born in Monterrey, Mexico, but grew up in Dallas, Texas. He loves to deep dive into stories and people’s journeys, and this appreciation extends to learning more about the history of artists, teams, lands, and his friends. A lot of his time since starting at The University of Texas has been spent with music, exploring new places, and spending time with the people he loves.

In addition to Canfield Business Honors, Bernardo completed a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management and a minor in Marketing. On top of his required coursework, Bernardo took many classes for the sake of learning more. These classes include Social Dance, Broadway, History of Mexican Music, Philosophy, Design, and many more. When asked why he was drawn to Canfield Business Honors, Bernardo says, “I was drawn to the Canfield Business Honors Program by the welcoming community, but I could not have anticipated how key this would be for my university experience.”

As the Head of Operations at BiteSight, Bernardo is responsible for onboarding restaurants, managing content operations, and wearing all other hats that the organization may need. When asked about lessons he learned while working at the organization, Bernardo shared with us, “As a team, we practice being receptive to ideas that are not possible in our current state, but that we can dream towards. Imagination is important for us.” Bernardo explains that the process of creating a business from the ground up is like winning the lottery. He gets to work on something he finds interesting and “cool,” all the while, it being incredibly difficult and demanding. Bernardo says that when creating a company, you need to make sure you have a high attention to detail and a lot of moxie to push through challenges that arise while trying to create something from the ground up. Bernardo shares with us his favorite part about working at BiteSight, “Seeing people love and believe in what we are building is really sweet. All of us would have been power users if BiteSight already existed, and now we can bring that experience to the public.”

Bernardo reminisces on his time in Canfield Business Honors and reflects on the fact that the courses and environment allowed him the opportunity to explore. While he was in the program, he was able to imagine himself in many different careers, but because of the help of his professors, advisors, and peers, he was able to find his passion.

Bernardo would like to share a quote from Jenny Holzer, an American artist, for current students to think about: “Playing it safe can cause a lot of damage in the long run.”
