If you want to view two different Excel spreadsheets at the same time and it seems like you can’t, well, you can. If you have one Excel file open and then you open another, it replaces the previous one and you’ll end up jumping back and forth between your spreadsheets. Instead, view them both side by side, this allows you to compare data more effectively.
Here is how you do it:
- Open both of the Excel files you wish to view together.
- Go to the View tab and in the Window section click the View Side by Side command button.
- You will now be able to see both of your spreadsheets simultaneously.
Options:
• You can click and drag, move, and resize your two spreadsheets as needed.
• Synchronous Scrolling – This command on the View tab will let you scroll through your two spreadsheets individually or simultaneously.
• Reset Window Position – This command, also on the View tab, will reset your side by side view to an above and below view. This is the default view and the first time you view side by side spreadsheets they will be above and below.
Excel will remember your last side by side view set up and open future files to the last set position you viewed in.
I hope this will help everyone who is comparing data from one spreadsheet to another.

Is it possible to have each sheet on a different monitor?
Works great! Thanks!
Lawren,
I found this article on using multiple monitors with side by side viewing. Check it out: http://www.lytebyte.com/2008/05/13/how-to-open-two-excel-files-side-by-side-in-separate-monitors/
How do you have one excel sheet/file opened on one screen and a totally different excel sheet/file opened on the second monitor? I know it can be done because I was able to do it at an old job, but I don’t know what steps to take. Can anyone help with this?
I just found what looks like a solution to my earlier question. If anyone has the same question then check out this link:
http://brett.batie.com/microsoft/open-excel-in-multiple-windows/
It requires you to download this software, but so far it’s working.
Tamekia – Thanks for the good question, and for the solution!
You’ve made my job so much easier, thank you.
Great! thanks for smart solution. It makes my work a lot easier and quicker
What do you do if the options are grayed out and can’t be selected? I have Window that can’t be expanded and doesn’t have a minimize or maximize option for the spreadsheet.
thank for support.
But still two different worksheet do not come in 2 session. It appears on same worksheet . please guide
Anil, see if this works for you – http://www.lytebyte.com/2008/05/13/how-to-open-two-excel-files-side-by-side-in-separate-monitors/
How come I can’t even click on “view side by side.” It’s shaded so I can’t even click on it. Help me please before I lose my mind. -Chriss
Hi Chrissa. This is actually something I just ran across last Friday. It turns out that you have to have two Excel files open that are already saved to your computer. If you’ve just opened a new one and it isn’t saved yet, “View side by side” won’t be available. If you go ahead and save the new file it should fix things.
I saved my new file as a 2010 excel worksheet and it was still grayed (shaded) out. In frustration, and after many many minutes of reading ‘how to’ hints, I closed the workbook and reopened it. Voila, the view side by sided command was there and usable!
I think now I need a drink!!!
Thank you, thank you!
so frustrated wanting to see 2 spreadsheets at the same time and not being able to. took a chance with a search and found this. YEA!
Makes my life so much easier.
Why on earth do we need this inadequate workaround? Having multiple files open in different windows has been available for years and years. This “solution” leaves me with both files open in one window, which means constant resizing and scrolling rather than real side by side work. MS has really screwed my workflow with this downgrade.
We don’t want theme “stacked” I want them side by side.
How do make this happen? Found this source but after doing it, the excel files don’t want to open by clicking on them.

Hi Mike. Have you tried using the Arrange All button on the View tab?
Thanks,
I’ve been wondering how to do this for years. It’s amazing what you can learn in a google search. Took me 5 seconds to apply. THANKS SO MUCH!!!
