Videogame Development and Supply Chain Evolution

In May 2008, the Supply Chain Management Center (SCMC) awarded a faculty research grant to Professor Edward G. Anderson for research examining the videogame development process with a focus on the industry’s evolving supply chain. The grant supplemented an existing research effort by funding the purchase of modeling software and trips to interview firms such as Electronic Arts and Sony Online Entertainment.

Edward G. Anderson is an Associate Professor of Operations Management in the Department of Information, Risk, and Operations Management (IROM) at the McCombs School of Business. Dr. Anderson joined the McCombs School faculty in 1997 after receiving his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

For this project, Professor Anderson collaborated with Geoffrey G. Parker, Associate Professor of Economic Sciences from the Freeman School of Business at Tulane University, and John Paul MacDuffie, Associate Professor of Management from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.

In May 2009, they presented “Videogame Project Management: Coping with Limits to Modularity” at the Production and Operations Management Society (POMS) International Conference in Orlando, FL.

Professors Anderson and Parker also worked with Burcu Tan, a Ph.D. student in the Department of IROM, on a paper titled “The Effect of Product Design on Platform Economics in Videogame Supply Chain.”

Targeted for Management Science, the game-theoretic-based paper examines how videogame platform providers, such as Sony (Playstation 3), Nintendo (Wii) and Microsoft (Xbox 360), leverage videogame suppliers through their platform design choices. Through real-world examples, the paper provides a grounded insight into the structure of the videogame industry. The authors focus on the trade-offs between investing product development resources to increase a platform’s core functionality versus investments designed to change or leverage the platform’s network externalities.
