The “sharing economy” can be defined by the use of technology, particularly free apps such as Uber or AirBnB, to borrow or rent services at discounted rates, leaving a large amount of excess consumer goods behind such as rental cars and hotel rooms. This transactions costs revolution will transform the boundary between renting and owning. Just as automation and robotics was disruptive to the manufacturing economy, software is doing to the same to the service economy and that has become a problem. Michael Munger, Political Science Professor at Duke University, will discuss his upcoming book Tomorrow 3.0 as well as examine collaborative consumption and the roles individuals and regulators should take in preventing long-term and potentially damaging effects to the global economy.
