jochauvinThis week let’s get to know another MPA Staff member, Jo Chauvin. Jo has been with the MPA Office since 2004. In her role as a Career Consultant, Jo helps MPA students with a variety of issues including recruiting strategies, career options, resume reviews, mock interviews, networking advice, and much more! If you’d like to make an appointment with Jo, you can do so through MOR.

We asked Jo a few questions to get to know her better…

  • Tell us a little bit about you and your background.
I was born and raised in Vancouver, B.C., then moved to Washington state for school. I’ve been in Austin for 13 years. I’ve been an MPA Career Consultant for about 2 years, and before that was the MPA Special Projects Coordinator. Outside of McCombs I have been a theatrical improvisor for about 8.5 years, and have taught Improv 101 at The Institution Theater for 2.5 years.
  • Choose your age forever, what age would you choose and why?
My current age, plus one year, because every year gets better!
  • If you could have any kind of pet what would it be?
Cats…which I do (Gizmo and Mildred)
  • If you could meet any celebrity who would it be and why?
Maybe it’s because I have a degree in Video Production, but I’ve always greatly admired Alan Alda. When he won his first Emmy for writing, he was so happy that he performed a cartwheel before running up to the stage. He was also the first person to win Emmys for acting, writing, and directing for the same series. One year he was nominated for an Oscar, an Emmy, and a Tony. And he was a huge advocate for women and worked on behalf of the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970s. He’s been married for almost 60 years with never a hint of scandal. He’s my hero because he works hard, has fun, enjoys his family, supports equal rights, and is a fantastic role model.
  • If you could be an Olympic athlete what sport would you compete in?
    Improv!!!
  • Why are you excited to work with MPA students?
The students have a great respect for academics and learning, but they’re also very creative and well-rounded. They have so many interests outside of school and every student is completely unique! I have fun in my job!
