Paid Internship and Semester Away Opportunity in New York City

NY Union Semester, a unique academic internship in New York City, is now accepting applications for the fall 2012 and spring 2013 semesters. This program is designed for students at your academic institution who are passionate about social justice. It combines academic scholarship and on-the-ground experience at organizations committed to progressive labor and social action.

 The program includes

  • A 32-hour/week internship at a labor union or a labor-affiliated organization in New York City
  • Labor studies courses at the Murphy Institute at the City University of New York (CUNY) worth 16 credits for undergraduates and 12 credits for graduate-level students
  • A certificate in Labor Studies from CUNY’s School of Professional Studies
  • In-state tuition and a $1,900 scholarship
  • A $210 weekly stipend and monthly unlimited-ride transit allowance plus
  • Networking opportunities and the chance to experience New York City’s rich cultural and political life.

The Murphy Institute for Worker Education and Labor Studies is a CUNY program established in the late 1990’s. Many of its graduates have gone on to become union or community organizers, researchers, labor lawyers or administrators at not-for-profit organizations. Most were referred to Union Semester by a contact at their home college or university.

Training Team: Line Numbering in Microsoft Word

When you’re editing a document or having a document edited by someone else, it’s often useful to know the number of the line of text on the page. For example, if a co-worker says you have a typo in the third line of your doc, that’s easy to find. But if they say you have a typo on the twenty-third line of your document, you’re stuck counting down twenty-three lines with a pretty good chance (at least if you’re me) that you’ll miscount. Teach young children to read and give back to the community in and around Austin, Texas, while gaining experience and benefits during your service year.  Our mission is to provide low-income schools with highly trained AmeriCorps tutors to ensure that children advance to grade level in reading before third grade. 

What’s in it for me?
You will be able to pursue alternative teaching certification, gain leadership skills and experience in education, and earn an education award of up to $5,550.  You will also be eligible for student loan forbearance while living in Austin and earning a modest monthly living allowance.

What’s involved?
You will tutor about 10 children one-on-one daily for 30 minutes as well as participate in a monthly Saturday service project.  You will teach and learn using a research-based curriculum and receive ongoing training and professional development.  Commitment is 1 year of service.  There is an option to tutor in Spanish.

Ranges Journal of International Relations Keynote Speaker: Raymond Slocumb

The Ranges Journal of International Relations and the MPA Council welcome PwC Partner, Raymond Slocumb. Mr. Raymond Slocumb will speak and answer questions concerning the challenges and successes of international business in our modern globalized context. A partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) – the world’s largest accounting firm, operating in over 150 countries – Mr. Slocumb is uniquely qualified to offer a distinctively private-market perspective on international relations and the role of the business sector in our highly integrated and politicized world.

Mr. Slocumb is scheduled to begin speaking at 7 p.m. followed by a Q&A session with the audience. Afterward, there will be a Meet & Greet reception time where students will have the opportunity to talk with Mr. Slocumb.
