Why did you choose to attend The University of Texas at Austin?
I have bled burnt orange since I was born. I’ve attended all but a few UT home football games since the age of seven, and I don’t think I ever imagined myself going to any university but Texas.
Why did you choose the MPA program?
Originally, I was set on majoring in finance. But, after an investment banking internship this past summer, I realized the tremendous value of accounting competence in any realm of business. I feel that an accounting degree gives me the most opportunities, and, as undecided as I am about my future, I don’t want to close any doors too soon.
What’s your favorite spot on campus?
The second floor of the Texas Union. It’s the perfect quiet study spot on campus, with comfy chairs that are easily convertible into beds for those days when I didn’t quite get enough sleep. Plus, Starbucks is right downstairs!
Where are your favorite places to go in Austin? What are your favorite things to do in Austin?
I love Austin for its unique personality, its natural beauty, and its to-die-for food. Among my favorite things to do:
- Visit South Congress, which features one-of-a-kind stores, delicious restaurants, and various festivals throughout the year…not to mention a wide array of interesting people.
- Go searching for scenic views and places around Austin. I love taking a drive around Capital of Texas Highway; it makes me realize that not every Texas highway is as dull and boring as I once thought. Or driving up into the hills on RM-2222 to The Oasis, a restaurant on a cliff overlooking Lake Travis. Its nickname is “The Sunset Capital of Texas” with good reason. Or driving a little farther south out Beecaves Road to The County Line On the Hill for great barbeque and unrivaled views of the Texas hill country.
- Pig out on Tex Mex. Austin has some of the best, cheapest Tex Mex you’ll ever find. Trudy’s, Matt’s El Rancho, and El Arroyo are among my favorites.
Other interesting facts about you:
- I love to write probably more than any accountant you’ll ever meet. I wish the accounting major consisted of more papers!
- I am an avid football fan, with a true understanding of the game and vast knowledge of college football trivia. Go Cowboys, and Hook ‘em Horns!
- I could eat Tex Mex every day for the rest of my life. Queso and guacamole are my weaknesses!

My name is Kajia, you can call me Richard . I’m from China. I’m interested in the Texas MPA program and have submitted my application recently. It is nice to know there is such a place to meet students who actually have experiences in this program. I read your profile and of course the passages you posted in this blog. It seems to me that your life in Austin is kind of stressful and meaningful. I would like to make further contact with you, so when you do have time, e-mail me. I’m looking forward to your response!
