Internship Lunch Series #3: Homeward Bound

April 26/27, I am on a Continental flight to Tokyo’s Narita Airport right now. But Tokyo isn’t my final destination; in eight hours or so, I should be landing in Taipei Taoyuan International Airport. This is my treat to myself, in celebration of the successful completion of my tax internship at The Big 4 Firm in Houston. In a way, it is also a celebration for the beginning of what I hope to be a new career. Although I still have roughly six months of classes left (summer and fall semesters) when I return from Taiwan, my mind is somehow at ease knowing that now I can concentrate one hundred percent on my studies. I am not going to lie-–it is a great feeling.

Before I get too excited about the three-week vacation at my parents’ place in Taipei, I think it would be a good idea to conclude the atrophied “lunch series” I tried to maintain on this blog. My apologies, once again, for not keeping up as I had hoped on the details of my internship. When I was living the day-to-day life of a tax intern, the details of my work did not seem blog-worthy. I Think I Have Converted

There are bits and pieces of who I am and how I act that are pretty representative of the Midwest culture I grew up in.

  • I am use to a small town where everyone knows each other and where no one is too busy to stop and help a complete stranger.
  • I say Pop not soda…and definitely not Coke.
  • When we talk about sports in Nebraska, it can only mean one thing: The Cornhuskers. With no pro sports of any kind, Nebraskans live and die by their Huskers and no other team.
  • On Sunday, you make no plans except those to spend with your family.
  • We say you guys not y’all, even when we are around just girls.

and

  • Being a high achiever means doing well in high school sports and then going on to graduate from UNL or Creighton

But now, four years into my stay at UT and the Great State of Texas, I think I have come to realize that I have converted. Texas feels like home to me. Continue reading I Think I Have Converted →

Asian Food In Austin

When I was moving back to Texas, many of my friends from Boston asked me about the availability of Asian cuisines in Austin. Honestly, I knew that Austin is famous for Tex-Mex, but I had never tried any Asian food in this mid-size city. Unfortunately, I truly survive on noodles and rice, and I can only handle so many of my own homemade meals. Back to School, Spring 2009

After an extremely pleasant and lengthy break between fall and spring semesters, we’re back in school. Before I explain how happy I am to be back, I thought I’d share a few pictures of the break.

Here’s one of me at the Master in Professional Accounting Council (MPAC) December party at the end of fall semester. My wife, Janssen, and I played some good doubles billiards against a couple of fellow MPA students. I honestly can’t remember who won the game, but Janssen for sure took the MVP spot for our team.
