I Think I Have Converted

There are bits and pieces of who I am and how I act that are pretty representative of the Midwest culture I grew up in.

  • I am use to a small town where everyone knows each other and where no one is too busy to stop and help a complete stranger.
  • I say Pop not soda…and definitely not Coke.
  • When we talk about sports in Nebraska, it can only mean one thing: The Cornhuskers. With no pro sports of any kind, Nebraskans live and die by their Huskers and no other team.
  • On Sunday, you make no plans except those to spend with your family.
  • We say you guys not y’all, even when we are around just girls.

and

  • Being a high achiever means doing well in high school sports and then going on to graduate from UNL or Creighton

But now, four years into my stay at UT and the Great State of Texas, I think I have come to realize that I have converted. Texas feels like home to me. Continue reading I Think I Have Converted

Beginning the recruitment journey: Career Nights

Happy New Year, everyone!

Oh wait… it’s already February? That’s unbelievable–the year has certainly gotten off to a fast start. Between fall finals, the holidays, and the beginning of this semester, it’s been a while since I’ve blogged, but I’m back on it now, I promise!

You may notice that my blog entries this semester will have a similar theme. But that’s with good reason: I am now in my second semester of the integrated MPA, which means I’ll be very busy with recruitment all spring. I’m excited, curious, and even a bit nervous about the whole process, so I’ll be sure to update frequently. Continue reading Beginning the recruitment journey: Career Nights

REAL WORLD – Public Accounting Style

I once had a professor who used the phrase “real world” a lot. Well, actually I took four of his classes. Either way, I have now experienced my first few weeks of the real world. The REAL WORLD of ACCOUNTING.

Now, I know that does not have the same ring to it that the MTV show does, but let me tell you, it is a lot of fun. My audit classes could never quite prepare me for this, but they did give me a great foundation. Initially the tasks I was assigned scared me, but there are so many people that are willing to help, I soon realized there was nothing to be afraid of. Back to School, Spring 2009

After an extremely pleasant and lengthy break between fall and spring semesters, we’re back in school. Before I explain how happy I am to be back, I thought I’d share a few pictures of the break.

Here’s one of me at the Master in Professional Accounting Council (MPAC) December party at the end of fall semester. My wife, Janssen, and I played some good doubles billiards against a couple of fellow MPA students. I honestly can’t remember who won the game, but Janssen for sure took the MVP spot for our team.

Round 1

…And I have reached my first finish line: the end of basic training. I say basic training because I know that this internship is just a solid ten weeks of training, learning skills that I could never acquire anywhere else. There is no substitute for real-world experience. Those of you who have had professor Lendecky know what I mean when I emphasize the important of real-world experience. J

This past week I had National Internship Training in San Francisco, CA. Going from 6 inches of snow to 70-degree weather was something I was more than happy to accommodate. A solid week of networking with 450 interns from all over plus 100-200 professionals makes the whole experience rather hectic. On top of that, the week put a nice cap on what the firm emphasizes most. Continue reading Round 1
