Basak Torun, MPA ‘09, was awarded the Austin Chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Scholarship. The $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a junior, senior or graduate student interested in pursuing a career in internal auditing or a closely related field. It recognizes local students who have excelled in their coursework and have made contributions to the internal auditing field throughout their studies. Academic Relations Chairman of the Austin IIA Chapter Gus Rodriguez, from the Office of the City Auditor, presented the award to Torun on April 28, 2009. Deloitte & Touche provided funding for the scholarship.
Torun is completing a dual MPA track in financial reporting and assurance and managerial accounting and control. Before beginning the MPA program, she worked in financial planning and project management at Xerox Corporation. She holds a bachelor of arts in political science and international relations from Bogazici University of Istanbul, Turkey and a master of business administration from the University of Illinois. Torun will graduate in August, 2009 and plans to pursue a career in internal audit services.
Urton Anderson, Department of Accounting chair, said of Torun, “Basak is an outstanding student with significant management experience. The combination will allow her to contribute immediately to the internal auditing team she is joining in September.”
