Healthy Living at McCombs

September 16th, 2008 · Executive Education · MBA · Staff News · Posted by Tracy Mueller

Business schools tout the value of networking for advancing your career, but faculty, staff and students at McCombs are also finding it useful for sticking to a healthy lifestyle.

Every Friday morning, Texas Evening MBA students meet near Austin City Hall for a TEMBA Trot - a five to seven mile run, followed by smoothies or coffee from Austin Java. The group will have its first meeting of the semester Sept. 19, said TEMBA Director Trent Thurman.

For others, healthy living means establishing a basic foundation of diet and exercise. Bob Wheeler and Bill Fleming, both with Executive Education, recently participated in Get FIT, a 12-week weight loss program administered by The Fitness Institute of Texas, part of the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education at the university.

“I’m a big guy, and I didn’t like going four days a week to work out,” said Wheeler. “I did it because I knew it was important to get my body moving and to get in some kind of shape. I lost about 15 pounds and I hope to lose another 10 this coming semester.”

The program includes three-day-a-week sessions for cardiovascular and weight training and also a weekly seminar that offers diet and nutritional advise. Get FIT is open to all faculty and staff, and fall classes begin Sept. 22. For more information or to enroll, call 471-0081 or e-mail fit@austin.utexas.edu.

This is great. It would be even better if we had a healthier eating option to the food served at O’s. It seems McCombs is missing out on a real potential cash cow by not improving the food offerings inside the business school.

I had a paper about this under my windshield earlier this week - for anyone who is interested, the exercise classes are 7-7:45 MWTh or 11:10-11:55 TThF and there are weekly “Lunch and Learns” W from 11-noon or noon-1. It’s $210 for the program. Looks like it runs 9/22-12/12.
