BHP Students,

Please stop by the BHP Office next Thursday, April 1^st between 1pm and 3pm for the BHP Alumni Coffee Chat. This chat features two alumni, Omar Ochoa and Charlie Cooper, both UT Law students with work experience as financial analysts. Coffee and cookies will be served at this event.

Omar Ochoa was the UT Student Body President in 2005-2006. After graduating from BHP/PPA in 2007, he worked in Corporate Accounting for General Motors as a Senior Financial Analyst in the Business and Competitive Analysis group.  In August 2008, he returned to UT for law school.  His law school activities include participating in Moot Court and being a teaching assistant for a legal writing class and a bankruptcy professor.  His professional legal experience includes a summer clerkship in Houston with the law firm Baker Botts and an internship with the Texas Supreme Court.  Just recently, Omar was elected Editor-in-Chief of the Texas Law Review.  His legal interests include commercial litigation, intellectual property law, and admiralty law.

After graduating from BHP/finance in 2004, Charlie Cooper worked for Bank of America from 2005 through 2007 as an analyst in their Financial Management Training Program.   After touring Europe on a bicycle in the summer of 2007,  he entered law school that fall.  In summer 2008, Charlie worked for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in San Diego and added a summer internship at Patton Boggs to his resume last year.  Following his graduation this May, Charlie plans to do a clerkship for Judge Robert Pitman in Austin.  He is exclusively interested in a litigation (rather than transactional) and plans to be a permanent Austin resident.

Is financing your degree program getting a bit too difficult? Consider the loans offered through the Franklin Lindsay Student Aid Fund. For U.S. citizens who are registered full-time, loans of $7,000 per year are available, and similar sums are available for subsequent years of study. They carry no interest expense until four months after you finish your degree or terminate your registration, at which time interest begins at a 4% simple and fixed rate, and a relatively long repayment schedule is established.

Applications must be accompanied by three letters of recommendation, and each loan must carry a co-signer. We’ve received a lot of questions recently regarding the internship course, BA 353H. So here’s what you need to know: All BHP students are required to complete the internship course (pass/fail only) in order to graduate. The internship requires the completion of 160 work hours and attendance at a mandatory internship orientation with Dr. Cox. In addition, students must turn in a detailed journal describing daily internship activities, an employer documentation form, an internship summary form, a current resume, and a term paper describing the student’s internship experience and its impact on the student’s career plans. All materials must be submitted in a three-ring term paper cover by September 15^th (if completed internship in summer), November 15^th (if completed in fall), or April 15^th (if completed in spring).
