Every year, the Canfield Business Honors Program celebrates Good Deeds Week, during which CBHP students and faculty alike come together to spend time with each other and share some random acts of kindness. One event that was hosted during Good Deeds Week this year was a canned food drive for the Central Texas Food Bank. This drive was hosted by the Honors Business Association and the CBHP Ethics Board, which both play a big part in bringing the Canfield BHP community together throughout the school year.

The Honors Business Association, or HBA, is committed to being “A Home for Canfield Business Honors Students.” Along with philanthropic events such as the canned food drive, HBA also hosts meetings with alumni speakers, which provides a great educational opportunity for students. Another important pillar of HBA is its emphasis on bringing the CBHP community together through fun social events, like the recently hosted CBHPicnic.

Since the Thanksgiving Break is right around the corner, External Affairs Vice President of HBA Kiersten Schmidt decided that a food drive would be a great way to unite the CBHP community in the spirit of giving. According to Kiersten, “[HBA] is another opportunity where everyone is involved in the same organization that can help foster friendships and lead to more success with our events.” Kiersten coordinated the food drive and hosted it in the CBHP office, which is a great place for students to come hang out and interact with faculty members. Having the drive in a fun place where students and faculty can get together made the drive that much more of a success.

Nicholas Kao, who is a member of the CBHP Ethics Board and is also the Financial VP of HBA, added that volunteering and donating draws many CBHP students because “word travels faster within the community.” Along with the canned food drive, Nicholas and the Ethics Board have been promoting other ethical behaviors on campus during Good Deeds Week such as appreciating faculty, environmental awareness, and mental check-ins.

As Good Deeds Week comes to a close, the Honors Business Association and CBHP Ethics Board continue to encourage community within the Canfield Business Honors Program by hosting events for students and encouraging ethical actions around campus. As students have begun to get back together in person, events like the canned food drive in support of the Central Texas Food Bank have been great ways for CBHP students to get together and give back, and the turnout at this event is a great indicator of the sense of community felt by CBHP students.
