Caleb Yu is a sophomore and founding class member of the Texas Computer Science and Business Honors (Texas CSB) program and currently triple majoring in Canfield BHP, finance, and computer science. We recently caught up with Caleb to hear about his experience at Texas CSB and to talk about his upcoming summer plans as an intern at Amazon.

“Originally, I’m from Plano, Texas and because of my majors, I’ve been set up pretty well in terms of finding my passion.” Caleb’s studies lay at the intersection of technology and business and understanding how technology drives businesses to improve and become more efficient as a result. Ultimately, Caleb would like to know how businesses that become more efficient improve the world – a lesson Caleb believes he can learn at Texas CSB.

“(Texas CSB) has given me a pretty versatile array of classes. I’ve taken classes like data structures, computer architecture, operating systems, algorithms, which is what I’m currently in, and then I’ve also taken business classes like financial and managerial accounting. I’m in the intro to business finance class and also taking statistics and modeling right now. I appreciate the balance between taking both business and computer science classes.”

Like many of our new students at Canfield BHP, Caleb had not yet decided on what he wanted to pursue in school when he arrived as a freshmen but he understood what his two interests were – business and technology.

“I had taken computer science classes in high school and I thought they were super interesting. I liked the way in which it required problem solving as well as the logic behind programming. Those are the classes I definitely enjoyed.”

As a high school student, Caleb found his interest in business after co-founding a nonprofit clothing brand.

“In high school, I co-founded a nonprofit clothing brand and valued the impact that I was able to make through a business. When I got to college, I found that these were two majors that entail things I’m interested in but at the time, I didn’t think I had gained enough exposure to either of them to pick one over the other. (Texas CSB) is a perfect opportunity for me because I didn’t have to choose.”

Already fully booked by his current array of classes and studies, Caleb also finds time to take part in organizations on campus like Texas Consulting, where he works with his team to win projects for the organization. At Texas Consulting, Caleb works on a variety of projects for large technology companies as well as projects for small local businesses in Austin where he gains the skills necessary to work for companies like Amazon.

After successfully applying and acing a couple of online coding assessments that involved cleverly finding bugs and other issues within lines of code, Caleb was selected for a final interview for the internship at Amazon. There, Caleb hopes to learn all about the processes that make Amazon tick.

“Working at Amazon will be super cool because I’m interested in experiencing their established processes and how things work. Being Amazon, these are processes that are industry standard and at the front running of cutting edge technology so just being involved in a company with that environment and having the resources to ask people and learn is something that I’m definitely excited about. Honestly, I’m just excited to learn from the people that work there.”

Caleb will be working with Amazon this summer as a Software Development Engineering Intern for 12 weeks. We hope to update this blog post in the fall after catching up with Caleb at the end of his successful internship. Stay tuned!
