The Rising Star Award, established in 2004-05, recognizes young alumni who have experienced professional success and have shown exemplary service to the Texas McCombs Alumni Network.

IBM Watson Internet of Things (IoT)

Lisa Seacat DeLuca is a distinguished engineer for IBM Watson Internet of Things where she leads a team called the App Factory, focused on bringing IoT use cases to market. Lisa holds a Masters of Science in Technology Commercialization from The University of Texas McCombs School of Business, and a Bachelors of Science in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University with minors in Business Administration and Multimedia Productions. This year, LinkedIn named Lisa one of their Top 15 Female Voices to Follow. In 2017, Lisa was inducted into the Women in Technology International (WITI) Hall of Fame, was named #2 in LinkedIn’s Top Voices in Technology List, named as a Top Women in Tech IoT Influencer by Onalytica, and received an honorary PhD from Claremont Graduate University. In 2016, Lisa was named one of the Most Influential Women in IoT. She was named one of MIT’s 35 Innovators Under 35 in 2015, as well as, LinkedIn’s NextWave of 10 Enterprise Technologists Under 35, one of Fast Company’s 100 Most Creative People in Business, and IBM’s Working Mother of the Year for Working Mother Magazine. In 2014, she was named one of Network World’s 50 Most Fascinating People in the World of Technology. She is a TED speaker, a self-published author of two children’s books titled, “A Robot Story” and “The Internet of Mysterious Things,” and the most prolific female inventor in IBM history and the only one to ever reach the 100th Invention Plateau Award (an IBM internal patent award system). Her innovation portfolio includes over 600 patent applications filed within the United States and abroad, of which, 300 have been granted, to date. The subject of her patent ideas range from areas such as cloud, mobile, IoT, social, security, cognitive, commerce and everything in between. Lisa is an AAAS-Lemelson Inventor Ambassador where she increases visibility to the importance of innovation. Lisa has spoken at numerous tech conferences and written articles to share her technology and innovation passion with others.

As chief executive officer, David is responsible for leading Cambridge Associates. He also oversees the collective efforts of our dedicated practice areas and our research team. He and more than 200 investment directors are responsible for implementing portfolios and partnering with endowments, foundations, private clients, and Pensions to meet or exceed each client’s investment objectives. Prior to David’s current role, he was president of the firm as well as the founding leader of our pension practice, creating and implementing innovative portfolio management frameworks that have transformed our pension clients’ approach to investing.

David has over 25 years of investment experience, including founding his own investment management firm. Prior to joining Cambridge Associates in 2003, he operated Druley Investments Management for nine years. While attending business school, David interned as an investment analyst at the Teacher Retirement System of Texas.

David is a CFA Charterholder and earned both his BBA and MBA degrees at The University of Texas at Austin.

Jeff Duchin joined UMB in 2016 as a senior vice president and a sales manager within the Investment Banking Division. Along with actively working to expand UMB’s fixed income presence nationally, he will continue to service institutional accounts in a sales capacity.

Jeff previously worked as a director in the institutional fixed income division of Hilltop Securities (formerly Southwest Securities, Inc.). He concentrated his efforts on providing the best execution and bringing new investment ideas to institutional clients with a focus on both tax-exempt and taxable fixed income products, including agency and non-agency mortgage-backed securities, asset-backed securities, commercial mortgage-backed securities, and U.S. corporate bonds.

Jeff is an active and engaging alumnus for The University of Texas at Austin. His past service includes president of the Texas Exes Dallas Chapter, chair of the McCombs BBA/MPA Alumni Network Advisory Board, chair of the Chapter Advisory Board, board member of the Texas Exes, and council member on the Red McCombs School of Business Advisory Council. Currently he is the scholarship chair of the Steve Hicks School of Social Work Dean’s Advisory Council, as well as a council member of The University of Texas 1883 Council, a Texas Exes-sponsored leadership development volunteer organization.

Jeff earned his Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Finance from The University of Texas at Austin in 1998. He also holds the FINRA Series 7, 53, 24 and 63.

The McCombs School will recognize the Rising Stars at the Hall of Fame ceremony in November. The event will also recognize the 2018 Hall of Fame Inductees.
