U.S. News and World report rankings are based 100 percent on peer assessment. Deans and directors are asked to rate the quality of programs they are familiar with on a scale of 1 (marginal) to 5 (distinguished). On the specialty rankings, they are asked to nominate (but not rank) up to 10 of the best programs in each specialty.
