Almost 580 college fencers from 37 colleges across the country participated in the United States Association of Collegiate Fencing Clubs’ (USACFC) annual Collegiate Fencing National Championships in Lansing, Michigan this past April. Of those, iMPA student Sean Li, currently Treasurer of the University of Texas Fencing Team, took first place in Men’s Sabre in the two-day tournament. A Top 8 finalist in 2016, Sean once again demonstrated his fencing prowess, beating a fencer from the University of Michigan in the last round 15-5.

A fencer for 10 years, Sean led the UT Fencing Team to be ranked #1 in Texas and is dedicated to improving the University of Texas Fencing Club. He, along with the other club officers, worked tirelessly to help build up the team, which has been improving each year and rising in the national ranks. Sean enjoys coaching his teammates as seeing other people enjoy the sport is important to him. He even spent a good portion of this year’s tournament helping a teammate who had torn his ACL navigate the healthcare system to get the help he needed.

For Sean, “Fencing is physical chess. You’re thinking very fast and ahead.” A perfect match for accounting! He’ll be interning with PwC in 2018 and said he plans to fence in the local DFW club. We are extremely proud of the sportsmanship he’s demonstrated as he represents the University of Texas and looks forward to his future wins.
